A late-night shooting at an apartment complex on San Antonio’s East Side left one teenager dead and five other people injured, including two young girls, as police launched an investigation into the violence that unfolded during Independence Day celebrations.
Authorities said one of the individuals taken to a hospital has been identified as a suspect, while another suspect is already in police custody.
Gunfire Erupts Near Apartment Complex
The shooting was reported at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Saturday at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Lamar Street, near North Mittman Street.
According to the San Antonio Police Department, the incident occurred as Fourth of July festivities were taking place throughout the city.
Preliminary findings indicate that three suspects were walking near the apartment complex when they opened fire toward the property.
Investigators Probe Possible Exchange of Gunfire
Police believe there may have been an exchange of gunfire before officers arrived at the scene, although investigators are still working to determine exactly how the shooting unfolded.
When responding officers reached the apartment complex, they discovered several victims suffering from gunshot wounds outside the building.
Witnesses told investigators that bullets struck people both inside and outside the apartment complex during the attack.
Teen Dies After Being Transported to Hospital
A teenage victim was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Five additional victims were hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Police identified the injured victims as two girls, ages 5 and 12, a 41-year-old woman, a 22-year-old man, and another individual whose age has not yet been released.
Suspects Identified as Investigation Continues
Authorities said one of the people transported to a hospital has been identified as a suspect in the shooting.
Another suspect was arrested at the scene or shortly afterward, while several other individuals were detained for questioning as detectives gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Investigators have not announced whether formal criminal charges have been filed.
