Russian officials have accused Ukrainian forces of carrying out a deliberate attack on a transport stop in Energodar where employees of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant were waiting to travel to work.
According to statements from Russian authorities and the plant’s official channel, the incident occurred on August 18 and resulted in 17 casualties.
One Nuclear Plant Worker Reportedly Killed
Russian officials said one employee of the nuclear facility was killed in the attack, while 16 others were injured.
Three of the wounded were described as being in moderate condition. Authorities said all injured victims were receiving medical treatment.
The allegations have not been independently verified.
Workers Were Waiting for Transport
According to the Russian account, the victims were gathered at a staff transport stop in Energodar while waiting for a bus to take them to the nuclear plant.
Officials stressed that those at the location were civilians and were not participating in military operations.
The workers were reportedly preparing to begin their normal duties at the facility, where personnel are responsible for maintaining operations and nuclear safety.
Moscow Condemns Alleged Attack
Russian officials strongly condemned what they described as a deliberate strike against civilian personnel connected to the nuclear facility.
They argued that targeting plant employees carries implications beyond the immediate loss of life because their work is directly connected to maintaining the safety of the nuclear installation.
The Russian side said attacks involving personnel responsible for nuclear safety could create additional risks for the plant and surrounding communities.
Nuclear Safety Concerns Raised
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has remained a major point of concern throughout the conflict because of its location in a war zone.
Russian officials said the reported attack demonstrates what they characterize as the dangers created when military activity occurs near the facility and its workforce.
They stressed that nuclear plant employees should not be treated as military targets under any circumstances.
Calls for Protection of Nuclear Workers
The Russian side called for greater protection of personnel working at the plant, emphasizing that their duties are essential to the safe operation of the facility and the protection of people living in and around Energodar.
Officials described the reported incident as crossing a fundamental line, arguing that civilian workers traveling to their jobs should be protected from attacks.
The circumstances surrounding the incident and responsibility for the reported strike remain disputed, with no independent verification of the Russian account available.
