Reform UK has called for an investigation into a reported political donation connected indirectly to convicted former FTX chief executive Sam Bankman-Fried, adding fresh scrutiny to the UK’s political funding rules.
Reform chairman Lee Anderson has reportedly urged the parliamentary commissioner for standards to examine Defence Secretary Wes Streeting over $50,000 in donations he received through Labour for the Long Term, a political think tank, in 2022 and 2023.
The controversy centres on claims that the think tank’s founder had previously received a $675,000 contribution from Bankman-Fried before funds were subsequently provided to Streeting.
Questions Surround the Source of Streeting’s Donations
According to reports, Streeting sought information about Labour for the Long Term’s donors before accepting the money.
Bankman-Fried was reportedly not listed among the donors disclosed to him at the time.
Streeting has said he never had any contact with Bankman-Fried, the former cryptocurrency executive whose collapse of FTX became one of the biggest scandals in the digital-asset industry.
Bankman-Fried is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence in the United States after being convicted on seven felony charges relating to the collapse of FTX and the misuse of customer funds.
Think Tank Founder Denies FTX Funding
David Lawrence, the founder of Labour for the Long Term, has rejected the suggestion that Streeting’s contribution was financed by Bankman-Fried.
Lawrence said the money provided to Streeting came from another donor.
He also reportedly maintained that the organisation had not received donations from either the FTX Foundation or Bankman-Fried himself.
The competing claims are likely to increase pressure for greater scrutiny of how political organisations establish the origins of donations before passing funds on to politicians.
UK Donation Rules Face Fresh Scrutiny
The dispute has also highlighted concerns about weaknesses in Britain’s political funding framework.
Under existing UK rules, certain unincorporated associations can make political donations above the £500 threshold without necessarily exposing the ultimate source of the money.
Critics argue that such arrangements can potentially allow organisations with UK connections to act as intermediaries for overseas or undisclosed funding.
That issue has become particularly sensitive as political parties and politicians face growing questions over the transparency of large donations.
Farage Faces His Own Donation Controversy
The latest controversy comes at an awkward time for Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who is preparing to face voters in a by-election after resigning his parliamentary seat.
Farage has previously faced scrutiny over substantial financial support from figures associated with the cryptocurrency sector.
He received millions of dollars in donations from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, while George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster with links to a crypto gambling operation, also provided financial assistance.
Farage has described the contributions as gifts, but the controversy has continued to draw attention to the relationship between British politics and wealthy cryptocurrency figures.
Bankman-Fried’s Legal Options Narrow Further
The political controversy involving his name comes shortly after another significant development in Bankman-Fried’s legal battle.
The US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit formally issued a mandate upholding his conviction and 25-year prison sentence.
The court had previously rejected his appeal in June, leaving the former FTX executive with fewer avenues to challenge the punishment.
Bankman-Fried could still petition the US Supreme Court, while a presidential pardon would represent another potential route to an earlier release.
For now, however, the latest UK political donation dispute has placed his name back in the spotlight, raising broader questions about how money linked to controversial cryptocurrency figures can move through political organisations and ultimately reach elected officials.
