Katherine Ryan has spoken about the conflicting emotions she experienced after Russell Brand was found guilty of rape and sexual assault, saying the verdict brought a sense of relief but also renewed sadness for the women who suffered abuse.

The comedian said she had been left emotional by the outcome and praised the survivors who came forward despite Brand’s celebrity status, financial resources and loyal following.

Ryan, who publicly challenged Brand’s alleged sexual behaviour years before the allegations became widely known, also expressed concern about how his supporters might respond to the convictions.

Ryan Reflects on Brand’s Convictions

Speaking on her podcast Telling Everybody Everything, Ryan said the verdict had left her feeling emotionally unsettled.

She said: “It really made me feel quite dysregulated again, caught off guard, emotional and in awe of the survivors, who also had nothing to gain.”

The 43-year-old highlighted the difficulties faced by the women who brought allegations against Brand, noting that they had to contend with his fame, influence, wealth and supporters.

Ryan said she did not celebrate other people’s suffering but acknowledged that some justice had been achieved through the verdict.

“There has been some justice done today. There’s a level of relief, but there’s grief alongside relief,” she explained.

She added that the court had established that serious wrongdoing had taken place, while the women affected would continue to live with the consequences regardless of the legal outcome.

Comedian Praises Women Who Came Forward

Ryan also spoke about the emotional experiences of women who have discussed the verdict privately rather than publicly.

She said many were sharing their reactions quietly because of concerns about potential attacks and the need to protect one another.

According to the comedian, the emotions surrounding the case were complicated, with relief and grief existing alongside each other.

She also expressed concern about what might happen following Brand’s convictions, particularly given his previous claims that allegations against him were fabricated by powerful institutions.

Ryan said Brand had spent considerable time presenting himself as the target of an establishment campaign, attracting supporters who continued to view the women who came forward as the villains.

She questioned whether he would continue recording podcasts while serving a potential prison sentence.

Ryan Confronted Brand During Roast Battle Filming

Ryan had previously challenged Brand over his alleged sexual behaviour when they appeared together as judges on Comedy Central’s Roast Battle in 2018.

During filming, she repeatedly described him as a sexual predator and made allegations about his treatment of women.

However, the exchanges were removed by producers and never appeared in the broadcast episodes.

Brand reportedly became furious about Ryan’s comments and subsequently appeared on the programme for only one series, leaving after six episodes.

Sources previously claimed that he had demanded producers protect him from similar remarks by other panellists.

Ryan’s confrontation was among the earliest occasions when a prominent television personality publicly challenged Brand directly over allegations concerning his sexual conduct.

Louis Theroux Interview Renewed Speculation About Brand

In 2022, Ryan discussed her concerns about an unnamed male comedian during an interview with documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux.

She described the individual as a predator and said she had confronted him directly while they were working together on a television programme.

Ryan explained that she had repeatedly challenged the man in front of an audience but was reluctant to identify him publicly because of the potential legal consequences.

She described discussing the individual as a legal minefield, pointing to his access to highly experienced lawyers.

The comedian also said she had received criticism for refusing to name him but maintained that the allegations were not hers to disclose.

Ryan insisted that she considered the people who had spoken about the individual credible.

Her comments prompted speculation that she was referring to Brand.

Comedian Addressed Sexual Misconduct Concerns at RTS Event

Ryan returned to the subject in 2023, shortly after several women publicly accused Brand of rape, sexual abuse and degrading behaviour.

Speaking at a Royal Television Society event, she referred to an elephant in the room before making a joke about her own weight.

Her remarks came as allegations against Brand were attracting widespread attention.

Ryan had also discussed the difficulty of deciding whether to continue working alongside someone she believed had committed sexual assault.

During a 2023 appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, she explained that she had struggled with the decision to accept professional opportunities involving the unnamed comedian.

The interview with presenter Lauren Laverne had been recorded before the allegations against Brand became public.

Ryan said she believed the individual was or had been dangerous but had been willing to appear alongside him on a television programme.

She described her compromise as agreeing to participate while making her feelings about him unmistakably clear.

Ryan said she had not noticed much reaction from the man himself, although other comedians who knew about his reputation had responded positively to her confrontation.

Ryan Condemns Brand’s Barrister’s Exchange With Journalist

The comedian also criticised Brand’s barrister, Ian Winter KC, following his confrontation with Sunday Times journalist Rosamund Urwin outside the courtroom.

Urwin’s investigation into Brand’s alleged behaviour helped bring victims forward.

After the verdict, Winter approached the journalist and told her: “I hope you are pleased with yourself.”

Urwin replied that she was pleased justice had been done.

The barrister then responded with an expletive, accusing her of having undermined the proceedings, before sarcastically congratulating her.

Reacting to the exchange, Ryan described the barrister’s behaviour as unprofessional, inappropriate and aggressive.

During the trial, Winter had argued that media reporting by Urwin and other journalists had prejudiced the case and made it impossible for Brand to receive a fair trial.

However, Mr Justice Bennathan rejected Brand’s attempt to prevent the trial from proceeding because of negative media coverage.

Brand Faces Years in Prison After Guilty Verdicts

Brand was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, leaving him facing the prospect of years behind bars.

The convictions followed allegations brought forward by women who described sexual offences committed against them.

Ryan’s comments following the verdict have revisited her earlier public confrontations with Brand, as she acknowledged the emotional consequences for the women involved and the continuing attention surrounding the case.
