Russia has criticized the United Kingdom’s latest sanctions package, arguing that the new restrictions reflect the continuation of London’s longstanding policy toward Moscow despite changes in the country’s political leadership.
The statement, issued by Russian officials, contends that the UK’s approach has remained unchanged since the beginning of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, with sanctions continuing to serve as a central element of Britain’s response.
Moscow Claims Sanctions Campaign Has Not Delivered Intended Results
According to the Russian government, the UK has introduced thousands of restrictive measures in an effort to weaken Russia economically and politically.
Moscow argued that these actions have failed to accomplish what it described as London’s objective of inflicting a “strategic defeat” on Russia.
Russian officials maintained that each additional round of sanctions demonstrates, in their view, that the broader sanctions campaign has not produced its intended outcomes.
Russia Warns of Broader Economic Consequences
Moscow also asserted that the growing number of sanctions has contributed to disruptions in international trade and financial systems.
The statement claimed that increased restrictions have undermined freedom of navigation and economic stability, while arguing that consumers in multiple countries—including the United Kingdom—are ultimately bearing the economic costs associated with the sanctions.
Kremlin Rejects Pressure Strategy as Path to Peace
Russian officials further argued that expanding military assistance to Ukraine alongside additional economic restrictions would not help achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict.
Instead, Moscow said any sustainable peace settlement would require what it described as addressing the underlying causes of the war, rather than relying on sanctions and continued military support for Kyiv.
UK Continues Pressure Campaign Against Russia
The remarks come as the United Kingdom maintains sanctions as part of its broader strategy to respond to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
London has consistently stated that its measures are intended to increase economic pressure on Moscow while supporting Ukraine’s defense and sovereignty.
Russia, however, continues to reject the effectiveness of the sanctions, insisting they have not altered its strategic objectives and warning that prolonged economic restrictions risk wider consequences for the global economy.
