New Bromley manager Karl Robinson has spoken highly of Jermain Defoe amid growing expectations that the former England international will join his coaching team.

Defoe is reportedly in discussions with the League Two club about becoming part of Robinson’s backroom staff following the dismissal of former manager Andy Woodman last month.

Although an agreement has not yet been officially announced, Robinson addressed the speculation during his unveiling on Thursday, describing Defoe as one of the finest professionals in English football.

The new Bromley manager believes the former Tottenham Hotspur striker’s dedication, discipline and approach to preparation could help improve the team’s performances.

Robinson Highlights Defoe’s Commitment to Professionalism

Speaking about the possibility of working with Defoe, Robinson described him as a major figure in Premier League history and praised his commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards.

He explained that he had spoken to people who knew and played alongside the former striker, including individuals who could testify to his dedication throughout his playing career.

According to Robinson, Defoe was renowned for arriving at training earlier than his teammates and remaining at the training ground well into the afternoon to work on his fitness and preparation.

His routine reportedly included massages, recovery sessions, gym work and video analysis of upcoming opponents.

Robinson also recalled a conversation in which Defoe explained why he maintained such demanding standards.

The former striker reportedly told him that completing everything required during the week allowed him to accept a poor performance because he knew he had done everything possible to prepare himself.

Robinson said the explanation gave him a deeper understanding of how Defoe had managed to maximise his abilities throughout his career.

Defoe’s Previous Coaching Spell Ended Abruptly

The potential Bromley appointment comes after Defoe’s departure from National League side Woking, where he spent just four months as manager.

The 44-year-old initially took charge of the club’s final six matches of the previous season and was expected to continue in the position when the new campaign began.

However, his time at Woking ended unexpectedly when he failed to report for work on the eve of the new season.

He subsequently contacted the club later that day to inform officials that he would not be returning.

His departure came amid reports of a strained relationship with Woking’s director of football.

Defoe has remained without a managerial position since leaving the National League club.

Robinson Believes Defoe Could Help Bromley Players Improve

Robinson believes Defoe’s experience and approach to football could help address some of the shortcomings he has identified within the Bromley squad.

The new manager suggested that certain players were yet to reach their full athletic, technical and tactical potential.

He believes Defoe could help change that through his emphasis on discipline, consistency and attention to detail.

Robinson also highlighted the former striker’s willingness to move into non-league management as evidence of his humility and desire to develop his coaching knowledge.

He argued that maximising one’s abilities was an essential part of achieving success in football, describing Defoe’s commitment to continuous improvement as an example for his players.

Former England Striker Brings Impressive Premier League Record

Defoe’s playing career provides considerable experience that could benefit Bromley’s dressing room.

The former England international scored 163 goals in 496 Premier League appearances, placing him 10th on the competition’s all-time goalscoring list.

He also enjoyed spells with Tottenham Hotspur and other clubs during a career that established him as one of the most recognisable English strikers of his generation.

Robinson believes the standards Defoe maintained throughout his playing days could translate into his coaching work.

Defoe Expected to Join Robinson at Hayes Lane

Bromley are still working towards completing Defoe’s appointment, but the former striker is expected to join Robinson in the dugout at Hayes Lane.

The club currently sit bottom of League Two and are looking to improve their position under their new manager.

Robinson’s first match in charge will be against Rotherham United in the first round of the FA Cup this weekend.

However, whether Defoe will be officially confirmed as part of his coaching staff before the fixture remains unclear.
