Mozambican Man Gets Multiple Life Sentences for Killing Police Officer in Welkom Shoot-Out

A Mozambican national convicted of killing a police officer during a violent confrontation with law enforcement in Welkom has been sentenced to multiple life terms by the Free State High Court.

The convicted man, Frimino David Matola, 55, was found guilty of murdering Sgt Disema Steven Mapane, along with two counts of attempted murder involving other police officers.

He was also convicted of illegally possessing an automatic firearm and ammunition, as well as violating South Africa’s immigration laws.

NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the robbery took place on November 24, 2022, and investigators later received intelligence linking Matola to the crime.

The team involved in the operation included officers from the Sasolburg public order policing unit, the Bloemfontein tactical response team, and Welkom detectives.

Armed Raid Turned Deadly in Thabong

Acting on the intelligence, police officers went to Matola’s residence in Thabong on December 6, 2022.

During the operation, a shoot-out broke out between Matola and police officers. Sgt Mapane was fatally shot in the exchange, while two other officers were targeted in what later became the basis for Matola’s attempted murder convictions.

Matola was not immediately arrested after the incident. He was eventually taken into custody on September 21, 2023.

Court Hears From Slain Officer’s Wife

During sentencing, the Free State High Court heard emotional testimony from Mapane’s wife, who described the pain, trauma and lasting damage caused by her husband’s death.

Life Terms and Additional Sentences Imposed

Matola was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Sgt Mapane.

The court also handed him two additional life sentences for the attempted murders of two other police officers involved in the operation.

For the illegal possession of an AK-47 automatic firearm, Matola received a further 15-year prison sentence. He was also sentenced to 12 months for unlawful possession of ammunition and another 12 months for contravening immigration laws.
