Xabi Alonso Refuses to Promise Trophies as Chelsea Fans Demand Answers After Another Disastrous Season

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso says he has been encouraged by the attitude and commitment shown by his players as he prepares for his first competitive match in charge, although he is refusing to set public targets for his debut season at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard officially took over on July 1 and will lead the Blues for the first time in a competitive fixture when they face Western Sydney Wanderers in Sydney on Tuesday.

Chelsea Looking to Recover From a Difficult Campaign

Alonso inherits a side desperate to rebuild after a disappointing Premier League season that saw Chelsea finish 10th, missing out on European football altogether.

The club has spent the past decade trying to return to the summit of English football, having last lifted the Premier League title under Antonio Conte.

A succession of managers has since failed to restore Chelsea as consistent title challengers, increasing expectations on Alonso’s shoulders.

Positive Atmosphere Around the Squad

Despite the pressure, Alonso believes the mood within the squad is encouraging as preparations continue for the new campaign.

He said the players have shown enthusiasm and commitment during pre-season, adding that Chelsea possesses plenty of talent to build a competitive side capable of challenging stronger opponents.

According to the new manager, assembling a squad with the right mix of technical quality and winning mentality will be essential if the club hopes to compete at the highest level in the Premier League.

Summer Signings Form Part of the Rebuild

Chelsea have already strengthened their squad during the transfer window, with Morgan Rogers arriving from Aston Villa among the headline additions.

Alonso views the new arrivals as part of a broader rebuilding project, stressing that creating a balanced team will require both patience and consistent hard work rather than quick fixes.

Flexible Approach Instead of Major Tactical Overhaul

Known for the attractive, possession-based football that guided Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga and German Cup double during the 2023-24 season, Alonso is not planning to completely reinvent Chelsea’s style overnight.

Instead, he said he intends to introduce fresh tactical ideas while preserving many of the foundations already in place.

The Spaniard emphasized that flexibility will be central to his philosophy, with formations and game plans adjusted depending on the opposition rather than sticking rigidly to one system.

He described the process as refining and updating the team’s approach instead of making sweeping changes.

Learning From Previous Experiences

Alonso’s reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches was established during his remarkable success at Bayer Leverkusen.

However, his managerial journey has also included a difficult spell at Real Madrid, where he departed after only seven months in charge following his appointment last year.

Those contrasting experiences have helped shape his coaching philosophy as he begins a new challenge in England.

Manager Refuses to Set Season Targets

Although supporters are eager to know what success would look like under the new regime, Alonso insists it is too early to define specific objectives.

The 44-year-old, who signed a four-year contract, said his immediate focus is on improving the squad, integrating new players and helping the team develop throughout the season.

While acknowledging that progress can happen at different speeds, he expressed satisfaction with the effort and energy displayed by his players during the early stages of pre-season.

For now, Alonso believes Chelsea’s strongest foundation is the positive atmosphere within the squad as the club attempts to begin a new chapter after several challenging years.
