Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has made it clear that captain Granit Xhaka will not be leaving the Stadium of Light this summer, insisting the midfielder remains fully committed to the club despite interest from Chelsea.

The Black Cats boss dismissed any lingering transfer speculation, stressing that the matter has been settled and that Xhaka has no intention of moving elsewhere ahead of the new Premier League season.

Sunderland Captain Fully Committed to the Club

Speaking about the Switzerland international’s future, Le Bris emphasized that Xhaka has already communicated his desire to continue leading Sunderland.

According to the French coach, the experienced midfielder is determined to help shape the club’s long-term ambitions after playing a pivotal role in their impressive return to the Premier League, where they secured a place in European competition.

Le Bris praised Xhaka’s influence on and off the pitch, describing him as a vital leader whose presence remains essential to the squad.

Chelsea’s Pursuit Comes to an End

Chelsea had been hoping to lure Xhaka away this summer, but Sunderland refused to entertain the approach.

Earlier reports revealed that the London club submitted an $8 million offer, which Sunderland rejected immediately, considering it far below the player’s value.

Although Xhaka was reportedly intrigued by the possibility of working once again with Xabi Alonso, under whom he enjoyed considerable success during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, discussions with Sunderland convinced him to reaffirm his commitment to the club.

His close relationship with supporters and his growing attachment to the club also influenced his decision to remain on Wearside.

Leadership Remains Central to Sunderland’s Plans

After wearing the captain’s armband throughout Sunderland’s successful campaign, Xhaka has become one of the dressing room’s most influential figures.

Le Bris believes his experience and leadership qualities will continue to play a crucial role as Sunderland prepare to compete both domestically and in Europe next season.

The manager sees the veteran midfielder as a cornerstone of the club’s project rather than a player available for transfer.

Sunderland Taking a Different Transfer Approach

Unlike last summer, when Sunderland dramatically rebuilt their squad following promotion by signing 14 new players, the club is expected to adopt a far more measured strategy during this transfer window.

So far, their only addition has been Belgian full-back Thomas Meunier, who arrived on a free transfer after leaving Lille.

Le Bris explained that much of the club’s recruitment work is happening behind the scenes, adding that maintaining secrecy is an important part of their transfer strategy.

He suggested supporters should not expect another major overhaul, noting that the circumstances are very different from a year ago when widespread changes were necessary.

Quiet Window Expected at the Stadium of Light

While Sunderland remain active in the market, Le Bris indicated the club will move carefully rather than make headlines with numerous arrivals.

He believes a discreet approach gives Sunderland the best chance of completing the right deals without unnecessary distractions, leaving open the possibility of further additions before the transfer window closes but signaling that significant squad changes are unlikely.
