Manqoba Mngqithi has become available for a new coaching role after being dismissed by Tanzanian club Young Africans on Saturday.
The 55-year-old coach, formerly of Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows, is now without a club, prompting renewed speculation about his next move and the possibility of joining Kaizer Chiefs.
Mngqithi was linked with the Chiefs coaching position on several occasions during his time at Sundowns.
Kaizer Chiefs Continue to Back Fernando Da Cruz
Kaizer Chiefs currently have Fernando Da Cruz in charge, although questions have emerged about his future following the club’s recent results.
On Friday, Amakhosi were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup during the preliminary stages, adding to the pressure surrounding the team’s performance.
Despite the setback, Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr publicly reaffirmed the club’s support for Da Cruz and his technical team.
“As a Club, we would like to reaffirm our full support for, and confidence in, the Head Coach and the entire technical team,” the club said in a statement.
Chiefs Defend Coaching Team After Continental Exit
In its statement, Chiefs said Da Cruz and his technical staff continued to have the club’s trust as they worked to implement its football philosophy and development pathway.
The club also praised their professionalism, work ethic and commitment to improving the team.
“The team is fighting hard every game to uphold a high standard of performance, and yesterday, despite the result and the injuries we carry, that warrior spirit was visible on the field,” the statement added.
The club maintained that it remained confident in the coaching team despite the Confederation Cup elimination.
Mngqithi’s Name Could Return to the Chiefs Conversation
Although Chiefs have publicly backed Da Cruz, Mngqithi’s availability has renewed speculation about a possible change in the dugout.
The club’s upcoming fixtures could become significant for the coach’s future, particularly the Carling Knockout Cup match against TS Galaxy and the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.
If Chiefs lose both matches, the pressure on Da Cruz could increase and potentially lead the club to reconsider its coaching arrangements.
However, Chiefs have not announced any decision to dismiss Da Cruz or appoint Mngqithi, and the club’s latest statement confirms its current support for the head coach.
