Pitso Mosimane could be on the verge of returning to the Bafana Bafana dugout, with reports suggesting that the South African Football Association has settled on the highly decorated coach as Hugo Broos’ successor.
According to SoccerBeat, SAFA has decided to appoint Mosimane as the next head coach of the national team.
The report comes as the association prepares for a National Executive Committee meeting on Saturday, 8 August, where the recommendation is expected to be formally ratified.
An official announcement could follow soon if the NEC approves the proposal.
Broos Leaves Behind a Strong Foundation
The potential change in the Bafana Bafana technical team follows the departure of Broos after more than five years at the helm.
The Belgian coach took charge in May 2021 and played a major role in rebuilding South Africa into one of the stronger national teams on the continent.
His tenure included a bronze-medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Broos also guided Bafana Bafana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where South Africa progressed to the knockout rounds for the first time.
SAFA had reportedly hoped to retain the experienced coach after his contract expired, but Broos ultimately opted against extending his stay.
Mosimane Would Bring Proven Experience
If confirmed, Mosimane would return to a position he has held before and take charge of a national team with renewed expectations.
The 62-year-old has developed one of the most successful coaching records in African football.
His managerial career includes spells at SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns, where he established himself as one of the continent’s leading coaches.
His achievements at Sundowns included five PSL titles and the 2016 CAF Champions League crown.
That success made him the first South African coach to lift the prestigious continental trophy.
A Continental Winner With Al Ahly
Mosimane subsequently took his career to Egypt, where he managed Al Ahly and added further major honours to his collection.
During his time with the Cairo giants, he won two more CAF Champions League titles and helped the club secure two FIFA Club World Cup bronze medals.
His career has since taken him beyond Africa, with coaching experiences in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran adding to his international background.
Bafana Bafana Could Enter a New Era
A return to the national team would give Mosimane another opportunity to lead Bafana Bafana while inheriting a squad that has made significant progress under Broos.
For SAFA, choosing Mosimane would represent a decision to place the national team under the guidance of a coach with extensive domestic and international success.
