The University of North Carolina football program is facing another unexpected challenge after defensive coordinator Steve Belichick was placed on indefinite medical leave.
The announcement comes just weeks before the Tar Heels begin their 2026 college football campaign, leaving questions about the coaching staff’s immediate future.
Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed the development during training camp on Thursday but declined to discuss specifics, citing the personal nature of the situation.
Bill Belichick Offers Limited Update
Speaking to reporters, the veteran coach explained that his 39-year-old son is away from the team because of a medical issue and would not elaborate further.
When asked whether Steve could return in time for North Carolina’s season opener against TCU on August 29, Bill Belichick remained hopeful but noncommittal, saying he looked forward to having him back as soon as possible without offering a timeline.
Defensive Coaching Duties to Be Shared
With Steve unavailable, North Carolina will not appoint a single interim defensive coordinator.
Instead, Bill Belichick said the entire defensive coaching staff will collectively oversee the unit during his son’s absence.
According to the head coach, every member of the defensive staff is involved in coaching multiple areas, allowing the team to continue preparing for the season despite the unexpected setback.
Steve Belichick’s Football Journey
Steve Belichick joined the Tar Heels after his father accepted the North Carolina head coaching job in late 2024.
Before arriving in Chapel Hill, he served as defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies and spent more than a decade on the coaching staff of the New England Patriots.
During his NFL tenure, he helped the Patriots capture three Super Bowl championships while working alongside his father.
Another Off-Field Distraction for the Tar Heels
The medical leave adds to an already turbulent offseason for North Carolina football.
Earlier this summer, general manager Michael Lombardi was placed on paid administrative leave while the university investigates an internal human resources complaint filed by a former staff member.
Lombardi had followed Bill Belichick from the NFL to North Carolina and has played a key role in reshaping the program since the coaching change.
Program Looking to Bounce Back
The Tar Heels are also attempting to recover from a disappointing 4-8 campaign in 2025.
That season was overshadowed by numerous off-field storylines, including intense public attention surrounding Bill Belichick’s relationship with his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.
