Toronto-based venture capital firm Radical Ventures has completed the first close of a new late-stage investment vehicle with more than US$1 billion committed, marking a major expansion of its focus on artificial intelligence companies approaching the next phase of growth.

The Radical Breakouts Fund is designed to provide substantial capital to AI businesses that have moved beyond their early development stages and are building toward large-scale commercial opportunities.

Major Canadian Institutions Join Global Investor Base

The fund attracted commitments from several major Canadian institutional investors, including the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments), Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments), Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP), TD Bank Group, BMO Financial Group, CI Global Asset Management and OPTrust.

Other international investors have also participated in the fund, giving Radical Ventures a broad institutional backing as it targets established AI companies with significant growth ambitions.

Fund Targets AI Companies Approaching Trillion-Dollar Scale

Radical Ventures said the Radical Breakouts Fund will concentrate on late-stage AI businesses that are positioned to become the next generation of companies capable of reaching trillion-dollar valuations.

The strategy builds on the firm’s longstanding involvement in artificial intelligence investing, with Radical having backed companies from their earliest stages through later rounds leading toward public-market listings.

Radical Has Backed AI Firms From Day Zero to Pre-IPO

Since its founding, Radical Ventures has invested across the full company-building cycle.

Its portfolio includes businesses it supported at the incubation or day-zero stage, such as Cohere, Waabi and World Labs.

The firm has also participated in later-stage financing for AI companies and has led or invested in rounds involving global businesses including Discovery Loop, World Labs, Etched and Crusoe.

That approach has allowed Radical to maintain relationships with companies as they progress from early technological development to more mature stages of financing.

Toronto Firm Expands Across Four Major Tech Hubs

Radical Ventures operates from four international offices in Toronto, San Francisco, London and New York, reflecting the firm’s focus on both Canadian and global artificial intelligence markets.

Alongside its Canadian investments, the firm has increasingly participated in financing rounds involving AI companies outside the country, giving its new late-stage fund a broad geographic investment focus.
