Authorities in Pensacola, Florida, are investigating a tragic incident in which two young sisters, aged five and eight, lost their lives after entering a residential swimming pool without supervision.

Police described the children as “adventurous” and said the circumstances point to a heartbreaking accident rather than foul play.

How the Children Accessed the Property

Investigators believe the older sister first managed to climb a privacy fence surrounding the backyard of a home on Gerhardt Drive.

Reports indicate she then allowed her younger sibling through an additional gate, giving both girls access to the pool area.

Police noted that the property had multiple layers of fencing, including a dedicated barrier around the pool itself, designed specifically to prevent unauthorized entry and protect children.

Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts

Emergency services were called after the girls were discovered unresponsive in the water on Monday.

First responders immediately administered life-saving measures at the scene before transporting both children to hospital.

Despite those efforts, medical staff later pronounced both sisters dead.

Police Assessment and Early Findings

Police Chief Eric Winstrom addressed the situation during a press briefing, explaining that investigators are still working to reconstruct the exact sequence of events.

He suggested a possible scenario in which the younger child may have entered the water first and struggled, prompting the older sister to attempt a rescue.

According to him, it is plausible the elder sibling drowned while trying to save her younger sister, who was believed to be a less experienced swimmer.

Movements Before the Tragedy

Authorities also confirmed that the sisters had been seen walking around the neighborhood approximately one hour before they were found in the pool.

This detail, according to investigators, supports the belief that no adult or third party directed them to the property.

Police emphasized that there is currently no evidence suggesting abduction or criminal involvement.

Investigation Status and Possible Charges

Officials have stated that they do not expect criminal charges to be filed, noting that all adults connected to the incident appear to have acted appropriately given the circumstances.

Chief Winstrom stressed that the case remains under active investigation, with autopsy results still pending.

He added that even with safety measures in place, the outcome has left authorities and the community confronting a deeply tragic accident.
