A deeply emotional courtroom scene unfolded in Collin County, Texas, as Jeff Metcalf, the father of slain high school athlete Austin Metcalf, directly confronted the teenager convicted of his son’s murder, Karmelo Anthony, during a sentencing hearing that ended in a 35-year prison term.

Anthony, 19, broke down in tears as he was formally sentenced for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Frisco high school track meet in April 2025.

The hearing, already heavy with grief, escalated when the victim’s father locked eyes with the defendant and demanded he face the consequences of his actions.

Emotional Victim Impact Statement Turns Confrontational

Jeff Metcalf used his victim impact statement to describe the devastating emotional toll of losing his son, telling the court that the killing had “destroyed the person” he once was.

He accused Anthony of avoiding eye contact while confronting him directly, saying, “You can’t even look me in the eyes right now, but you can stab my son in the heart.”

Raising his voice at moments, Metcalf described grief not as quiet sadness but overwhelming rage, striking his fist as he declared that his son’s death had shattered his faith in people, safety, and normal life.

Although he said he forgave Anthony “the day it happened,” he clarified that forgiveness did not extend to the act itself or its consequences.

Family Describes Lifelong Loss and Anguish

The courtroom also heard powerful statements from Austin’s twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, and his mother, Meghan Metcalf, both of whom described the lasting emotional damage caused by the killing.

Hunter, struggling to maintain composure, directly addressed Anthony and asked him to look at him while speaking.

He described losing not only a brother but his closest friend, someone who had been central to his life and future.

He spoke about daily emotional pain, his mother’s grief, and the absence that now defines their home, saying the defendant had taken away “everything that mattered.”

Mother Calls Sentence a “Lifetime of Loss”

Meghan Metcalf described her son as warm, protective, and deeply loved, recalling him as a “hugger” who brought people together.

Addressing Anthony, she said that while he would serve decades in prison, she had already been sentenced to a lifetime without her child.

Her testimony focused on both Austin’s character and the irreversible loss experienced by the family.

Details of the Fatal Track Meet Stabbing

The court case centered on the deadly incident at a Frisco Independent School District track meet in April 2025, where prosecutors said Anthony stabbed Austin Metcalf during a confrontation under a team tent.

Witnesses testified that Anthony made threatening remarks before the altercation escalated. After Metcalf pushed him, Anthony allegedly pulled out a folding knife and stabbed him once in the chest.

Medical testimony revealed that the blade pierced Metcalf’s chest bone and fatally injured his heart. His twin brother was among the first to rush to his aid as chaos unfolded at the scene.

Jury Rejection of Self-Defense Claim

Anthony had argued self-defense during the trial, but prosecutors rejected that claim, stating that witness accounts consistently identified him as the aggressor.

Prosecutors also challenged attempts by the defense to reduce the conviction under Texas’s “sudden passion” provision, arguing that the evidence did not support the claim that Anthony acted under uncontrollable emotional distress.

After deliberation, jurors found Anthony guilty of murder and later determined the 35-year sentence, with eligibility for parole only after serving at least half the term.

Prosecutors Say Justice Was Delivered

Following the verdict, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said the outcome reflected accountability for violent crime, particularly within school environments.

He stated that the ruling sent a clear message that such acts would not be tolerated in the community or educational spaces.

Divided Reactions Outside the Courthouse

Outside the courthouse, emotions ran high as supporters of both families gathered.

Some mourned the loss of Austin Metcalf, while others expressed concern over the fairness of the trial process, including the composition of the jury.

Despite tensions, officials maintained order as law enforcement secured the area during the high-profile proceedings.

A Case Marked by Grief, Anger, and Finality

As the hearing concluded, what remained most striking was the raw emotion inside the courtroom — a father demanding accountability face-to-face with the teen convicted of killing his son, and a family left grappling with permanent loss.

The sentencing marked the legal end of the case, but for the Metcalf family, the impact of the April 2025 stabbing continues to define their lives.
