CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has been admitted to intensive care after suffering a serious injury during his side’s Spanish second-division encounter against Andorra on Monday.
The 30-year-old is currently in stable condition following a frightening collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, which forced the referee to abandon the match during the seventh minute of stoppage time.
The fixture was level at 2-2 when the incident occurred, with both teams still searching for a late winner.
De Miguel Left Motionless Following Midfield Challenge
The incident happened as Tenerife launched a counter-attack deep into added time.
De Miguel was attempting to reach a long ball when Owono came forward to clear it near the halfway line.
The goalkeeper’s raised knee appeared to strike the striker in the chest, sending him crashing to the ground.
De Miguel initially rolled around in pain before becoming motionless, prompting medical personnel to rush onto the pitch to provide emergency assistance.
Medical staff attended to the forward for more than five minutes as his teammates watched in distress.
Several Tenerife players were visibly emotional, with some appearing to break down in tears as the seriousness of the situation became apparent.
Club Confirms Intensive Care Admission
Tenerife subsequently confirmed that De Miguel had been taken to the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
In an official statement, the club said:
“CD Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel is admitted to the ICU at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, stable despite the severity of his condition.
“The medical services at said hospital will be present and will report when there are updates.”
Spanish media outlet Marca reported that the striker suffered a cardiac arrest while being transported to hospital and had to be resuscitated inside the ambulance.
Although his condition has been described as stable, reports indicate that he remains unconscious.
Owono Sent Off as Referee Abandons Fixture
Owono was initially shown a red card for his challenge on De Miguel as medical personnel continued treating the Tenerife forward.
The referee subsequently decided to abandon the match, bringing an end to the contest with the score still at 2-2.
The decision came as players from both sides remained concerned about De Miguel’s condition following the emergency on the pitch.
Andorra Sends Message of Support to Injured Striker
Andorra issued a statement expressing support for De Miguel, his family and Tenerife following the incident.
The club said:
“We want to send all our strength and best wishes to Jesus de Miguel after the serious incident suffered during today’s match.
“We hope he recovers soon. A very strong hug to the player, his family and Tenerife.”
