Brittany Boltinhouse is challenging the circumstances surrounding the loss of her Miss North Carolina USA title, saying she believes her conservative Christian beliefs played a role in the decision to remove her from the crown.
The 27-year-old won the state title last month and was preparing to represent North Carolina at the Miss USA competition later this month.
Her reign was abruptly cut short after old social media posts, including one containing a racial slur, resurfaced online and were attributed to an X account believed to be hers.
Pageant Replaces Her With Runner-Up
A Blaize Productions, the executive producer and state license holder for the official Miss USA competitions in North Carolina, announced that Boltinhouse’s title had been revoked because of “recently surfaced information.”
Runner-up Myla Hadley was subsequently awarded the crown.
The company said the decision was not made lightly, but did not publicly provide a detailed account of the specific information that led to the removal.
The development transformed what had been a major achievement for Boltinhouse into a highly publicised controversy.
Boltinhouse Claims Her Beliefs Were a Factor
In an interview with Carolina Journal editor-in-chief Donna King, Boltinhouse offered her first detailed public response to the controversy.
She said she believed her removal was connected to her identity as a conservative Christian woman.
Boltinhouse described herself as a proud conservative and a “God-fearing” woman who loves the United States and believes in “a nation under God.”
She also explained that she is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
According to Boltinhouse, her political and religious beliefs were an important part of who she was and may have contributed to the decision to strip her of the title.
She Would Not Confirm the Posts Were Hers
When asked directly about the allegedly racist social media posts, Boltinhouse stopped short of confirming whether they belonged to her.
Instead, she focused on the idea that people should not be defined permanently by mistakes from their younger years.
“Every person has made a mistake,” she said, while making clear that she did not want the controversy to define her current identity.
She argued that the focus should instead be on the person she has become.
‘I Won’t Be Judged for My Past’
Boltinhouse also pointed to her accomplishments during her brief pageant career as evidence of her character.
She began competing in pageants only last year but quickly collected several titles.
Among her achievements was a Miss Congeniality award, an honour typically determined by fellow contestants and associated with a contestant’s personality and character.
She also highlighted being the first married woman to receive that particular award.
Boltinhouse said she believed she had earned her titles fairly and insisted she should be judged on who she is today rather than allegations concerning her past.
From Dream to Nightmare
The former titleholder described her experience with Miss USA as a dramatic transformation from a lifelong ambition into an ordeal.
What began as a dream opportunity quickly became a nightmare after the old posts circulated online and triggered widespread attention.
Despite the intense scrutiny, Boltinhouse said she had ultimately made peace with losing the title.
She even suggested that she was grateful she had been forced to face the controversy, saying the experience demonstrated that she could withstand intense public criticism.
Boltinhouse Says She Has Forgiven Pageant Officials
The former beauty queen also took a conciliatory approach toward the people who decided to remove her.
She said she was showing them grace and love because, in her view, they were capable of making mistakes as well.
Boltinhouse said she forgave those involved and suggested that they may not have possessed the same “wisdom and knowledge” she believes she has.
She declined to reveal more about what happened behind the scenes, citing a confidentiality agreement.
However, she strongly disputed the version of events surrounding her departure and said the narrative being presented about her was not accurate.
Miss USA Chairman Defends the Decision
Thom Brodeur, chairman of Miss USA, has offered a sharply different explanation for the removal.
In a lengthy Instagram statement, Brodeur said the organisation does not tolerate racism, homophobia, transphobia or language that dehumanises people.
He stressed that a state title is more than a decorative award and instead represents a position of public trust.
According to Brodeur, titleholders are expected to uphold certain standards, and he argued that those standards cannot be ignored when they are breached.
Pageant Says the Decision Was Not About One Incident
Brodeur also disputed the suggestion that the decision was based solely on one isolated event.
He said the issue involved “conduct over an extended period of time” and explained that state contestants are recruited, vetted and approved before competing.
The Miss USA chairman said the organisation acted after the information was brought to its attention.
His comments appear to indicate that officials believe the controversy involved a broader pattern rather than simply the resurfaced post that generated attention online.
Her Family Says She Deserves to Tell Her Side
A member of Boltinhouse’s family previously defended her and said it was important for her version of events to be heard.
The relative suggested that the family wanted to establish what they considered the proper narrative rather than allow the controversy to be defined solely by the organisation’s explanation.
The family also indicated that they were taking time to pray and remain united before deciding how to respond publicly.

The conflicting accounts leave key questions surrounding Boltinhouse’s removal unresolved.
The former Miss North Carolina USA maintains that her beliefs and the narrative surrounding her have been misunderstood, while Miss USA leadership insists the decision followed concerns about conduct and the responsibilities attached to holding a title.
For now, Boltinhouse’s expected appearance at the national Miss USA competition has disappeared, with runner-up Myla Hadley taking her place.
