Yet his record-breaking evening was overshadowed by an uncomfortable moment involving his longtime partner, Keri Russell, after viewers noticed that the Welsh actor did not acknowledge her in either of his acceptance speeches.
A Record-Breaking Night for Rhys
Rhys, 51, claimed his first prize of the evening for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his performance in The Beast in Me.
Later in the ceremony, he returned to the stage to collect Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Apple TV+’s Widow’s Bay, completing an unprecedented double.
The achievement placed Rhys at the centre of one of the night’s biggest Emmy stories, but attention quickly turned to what he left unsaid during his speeches.
Russell Goes Unmentioned
Russell, 50, was seated in the audience as Rhys collected his first award, but he did not appear to acknowledge his partner of 12 years.
The pair first fell in love while working together on The Americans, where they played married characters Philip and Elizabeth Jennings.
When Rhys’s name was announced for The Beast in Me, his co-star Claire Danes immediately stood and embraced him.
The emotional exchange was captured by cameras before Rhys headed toward the stage.
However, viewers noticed that he appeared not to look toward Russell as he made his way to accept the award.
One viewer on X commented that Rhys “doesn’t even look at Keri Russell next to him, and doesn’t thank her,” accompanying the post with footage of the moment.

Rhys began his first speech with a characteristically provocative joke, warning the ceremony’s producers, “If you try to turn me off, I’ll stab you in the eyes with this [award].”

Rhys had another opportunity to mention Russell when he won his second Emmy for Widow’s Bay.
But once again, Russell’s name was absent.

He also paid tribute to his parents and sister, who was present at the ceremony.
At one point, he joked about the women who had been standing, adding another lighthearted moment to an otherwise historic speech.
Russell’s Reaction Tells a Different Story
Despite the apparent omission, Russell’s reaction from the audience suggested there was no obvious sign of tension between the pair.
When Rhys won his second award, she was seen cheering enthusiastically and applauding from their table.
One social media user highlighted the moment, writing that “the cheer from her” was what mattered most.
Later, footage from inside the theater showed Rhys returning to Russell with one of his Emmys.
The couple embraced and posed together for photographers before leaning in for a kiss.
The affectionate exchange offered a markedly different picture from the awkwardness viewers had detected during Rhys’s acceptance speeches.
Russell Has Her Own Emmy Disappointment
The evening was more complicated for Russell, who was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for The Diplomat.
She ultimately lost the award to Rhea Seehorn, who was recognized for her performance in Pluribus.
The defeat added another storyline to an evening in which Rhys was celebrating an unprecedented personal achievement while Russell left without an award.
Widow’s Bay Dominates the Ceremony
Rhys’s double victory formed part of an extraordinary night for Widow’s Bay, which entered the ceremony as one of the major contenders and ultimately swept all six categories in which it was nominated.
The supernatural comedy-horror series also won Outstanding Comedy Series, beating Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building and Shrinking.
Kate O’Flynn won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, while Stephen Root took Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Katie Dippold also won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, while Hiro Murai collected the directing prize in the comedy category.
Rhys Plays a Skeptical Mayor
In Widow’s Bay, Rhys plays Tom Loftis, a widower and father who becomes mayor of the fictional New England island community.
His character arrives from the mainland and initially rejects the residents’ belief that the island is affected by a centuries-old supernatural curse.
His second Emmy victory therefore capped a remarkable run for the series and its leading man.
The Beast in Me Adds Another Win
Rhys’s first award came for his role as Nile Jarvis in The Beast in Me.
The psychological thriller follows his character, the son of a wealthy real estate magnate, as he moves next door to Aggie Wiggs, played by Claire Danes.
The role earned Rhys the limited-series acting prize earlier in the evening, setting the stage for his historic second victory.
The Pitt Takes the Drama Crown
Elsewhere, The Pitt once again dominated the drama categories.
The HBO Max series won Outstanding Drama Series, while Noah Wyle took Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch.
The show entered the ceremony with 25 nominations, the highest total for any single series.
Wyle’s victory came against competition from Sterling K. Brown, Gary Oldman, Mark Ruffalo and Rufus Sewell.
Other Major Emmy Winners
Rhea Seehorn secured Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus, beating nominees including Zendaya and Russell.
Jean Smart continued her extraordinary run in the comedy acting categories by winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks.
The victory marked her fifth consecutive win in the category and her eighth Emmy overall.
Sally Field also claimed Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Remarkably Bright Creatures.
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards were held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, with Law & Order: SVU star and executive producer Mariska Hargitay serving as host.
For Rhys, however, the night will be remembered for two very different reasons: an Emmy record that may stand for years, and the conspicuous absence of Russell’s name from both of his historic acceptance speeches.
