Egypt Defeat Australia on Penalties to Reach Historic FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Egypt secured a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in the nation’s history after defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw at Dallas Stadium on Friday.

The Pharaohs held their nerve from the penalty spot, converting all four of their attempts to seal a memorable victory and continue their remarkable run at the 2026 tournament.

Defender Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the decisive penalty after Australia missed twice during the shootout.

The victory follows Egypt’s first-ever World Cup group-stage win over New Zealand and marks another historic milestone for Hossam Hassan’s unbeaten side.

Ashour Gives Egypt an Early Advantage

Australia threatened first when Cristian Volpato struck the crossbar with an ambitious long-range effort in the opening minutes.

Egypt responded by taking the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour. After his initial effort from a set-piece was blocked, Karim Hafez recycled possession with a cross into the area, allowing Ashour to head home at the far post.

The midfielder, who had never scored for Egypt before arriving at the World Cup, has now found the net twice during the tournament.

Australia Hit Back After the Break

The Socceroos struggled to create clear opportunities during the opening half and were further disrupted when defender Jordan Bos suffered a knee injury that forced his withdrawal at halftime.

Egypt nearly doubled their lead immediately after the restart, but Omar Marmoush failed to convert a clear chance after breaking through on goal.

Australia quickly made Egypt pay for that missed opportunity. Aiden O’Neill delivered a dangerous free-kick into the penalty area, where defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently headed the ball into his own net to level the match in the 55th minute.

It was Hany’s second own goal of the tournament.

Goalkeepers Shine as Match Goes the Distance

Egypt pushed hard for a winner during the closing stages of normal time.

Goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced an outstanding one-handed save to deny Rami Rabia’s powerful header from a Mohamed Salah cross, keeping Australia in the contest.

Salah, who featured despite concerns over a hamstring injury, later created another chance for Haissem Hassan, but Harry Souttar produced a crucial block to prevent a late Egyptian winner.

With neither side able to find a breakthrough in extra time, the match was decided by penalties.

Pharaohs Hold Their Nerve in Shootout

Australia coach Tony Popovic introduced experienced goalkeeper Mat Ryan shortly before the end of extra time in an attempt to gain an advantage during the shootout.

The substitution did not alter the outcome.

Egypt converted every penalty, including a composed Panenka from captain Mohamed Salah, while Australia’s Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both failed to score.

Abdelmaguid calmly converted the winning penalty to spark jubilant celebrations among the Egyptian players and supporters.

Salah Reflects on Historic Victory

Named the Superior Player of the Match, Mohamed Salah described the victory as one of the greatest moments of his career.

The Egypt captain said playing through injury to represent his country made the achievement even more special, adding that the squad should enjoy a moment that had never before been experienced by Egyptian football.

Midfielder Haissem Hassan also praised the achievement, saying players had fulfilled a childhood dream by making millions of Egyptians proud and advancing beyond the knockout stage for the first time.

Australia Exit Despite Encouraging Tournament

Australia’s World Cup campaign came to an end despite another determined performance from its youthful squad.

Captain Jackson Irvine said losing on penalties was the hardest possible way to exit the competition but expressed pride in his teammates for their efforts throughout the tournament.

Forward Awer Mabil echoed those sentiments, saying Australia had showcased the country’s emerging talent and laid foundations for future international success.

The defeat also extended Australia’s unwanted record of losing all three of its FIFA World Cup knockout-stage appearances, having previously been eliminated by Italy in 2006 and Argentina in 2022.

Egypt Await Round of 16 Opponents

Egypt will now travel to Atlanta for a Round of 16 clash on July 7, where they will face the winner of the match between Argentina and Cabo Verde.

With confidence growing after another historic achievement, the Pharaohs will look to continue their impressive World Cup campaign as they pursue an unprecedented place in the quarter-finals.
