Authorities are preparing extensive security arrangements around England’s team hotel in Mexico City ahead of the country’s FIFA World Cup last-16 match against Mexico, with officials seeking to avoid disturbances that affected another visiting team earlier in the tournament.
The measures are expected to include a heavily secured perimeter around the hotel as England complete their final preparations before the knockout fixture.
Extra Protection Planned After Ecuador’s Experience
The security plans follow reports that Ecuador’s preparations for their match against Mexico were disrupted by noisy crowds gathered outside their hotel.
According to reports, cars, fireworks, loud music and fog horns continued late into the night, prompting complaints over the team’s inability to rest before the match. Ecuador also reportedly encountered travel delays at both the airport and on city roads.
Officials are now working to ensure England’s preparations are not similarly affected.
FIFA and Police Discuss Security Measures
Discussions are understood to be taking place between FIFA and local law enforcement over implementing what has been described as a “ring of steel” around England’s accommodation.
Although final arrangements have yet to be confirmed, England’s squad is expected to receive a police escort while travelling within Mexico City during their stay.
The team will also be accommodated at a different hotel from the one previously used by Ecuador.
Thousands of England Fans Expected at Azteca Stadium
Around 8,000 England supporters have reportedly secured tickets for the last-16 encounter, while overall attendance by England fans in Mexico City is expected to reach approximately 15,000.
The match will be played at the historic Azteca Stadium, which has a capacity of more than 87,000 spectators and is expected to host a passionate home crowd.
Officials have indicated that they currently have no intelligence suggesting England supporters face any specific security threats during the visit.
Supporters Urged to Respect Local Hosts
Authorities are expected to encourage travelling England fans to remain respectful toward local supporters throughout their stay.
Officials hope the occasion will pass without major incidents, particularly if England progress further in the tournament.
Ticket Resale Prices Soar Ahead of Knockout Match
Demand for the fixture has also driven ticket prices sharply higher on FIFA’s official resale platform.
More than 70 tickets originally allocated through the England Supporters’ Travel Club have reportedly been listed for resale, with some sellers seeking prices of up to £22,800.
Premium Category One seats were reportedly advertised for more than £51,000, highlighting the extraordinary demand surrounding one of the World Cup’s most anticipated knockout matches.
