Former England captain John Terry has expressed concerns over Thomas Tuchel’s management style during England’s World Cup campaign, suggesting the national team boss has been unnecessarily harsh on defender Djed Spence while continuing to trust him with regular playing time.

Speaking during Piers Morgan’s World Cup Uncensored programme, Terry argued that Tuchel’s repeated public criticism of Spence sends conflicting messages, especially as the Tottenham full-back has remained a consistent part of England’s plans throughout the tournament.

Terry Suggests Young Players Are Treated Differently

Terry believes Tuchel appears more comfortable directing visible criticism toward less-established members of the squad than he would toward senior stars with bigger reputations.

The former Chelsea captain pointed to recent footage from England’s match against DR Congo, where Tuchel was seen angrily confronting Spence following a throw-in. Combined with similar incidents during training sessions, Terry said the repeated outbursts had left him uneasy.

Although Terry praised Tuchel’s credentials as one of football’s elite coaches, he questioned whether established figures such as Trent Alexander-Arnold would receive the same treatment under similar circumstances.

According to Terry, the difference in how players are managed raises interesting questions about Tuchel’s squad selection and leadership style.

Mixed Signals Over Spence’s Continued Selection

Despite repeatedly challenging Spence from the sidelines, Tuchel has continued to include the defender in his starting plans.

The 25-year-old has featured in all four of England’s World Cup matches, starting against both Ghana and DR Congo.

While he was substituted during the knockout victory over DR Congo after struggling defensively against winger Brian Cipenga, Spence has remained a trusted option throughout the tournament.

Terry said this combination of public criticism followed by repeated selection creates confusing messages for both the player and the squad.

Terry Makes His Own Assessment of Spence

While defending the principle of fair treatment, Terry made it clear that he is not particularly impressed by Spence’s footballing qualities.

He admitted he does not consider the Tottenham defender to be among England’s strongest defenders and noted that the full-back had spent the season playing in a struggling Spurs side.

However, Terry insisted that his concerns were not about Spence’s ability but about the consistency of Tuchel’s management approach, saying he had not witnessed the England manager publicly target other players in quite the same manner.

Piers Morgan Challenges Terry’s View

Presenter Piers Morgan questioned Terry’s interpretation, suggesting Spence’s own personality may explain why Tuchel has been more forceful with him.

Morgan referenced previous incidents involving the defender, including reported disagreements with former managers Thomas Frank and Antonio Conte, describing Spence as someone with a confident and occasionally confrontational character.

Even after hearing those arguments, Terry maintained that Tuchel’s handling of the player remained inconsistent, particularly because the manager continued to rely on him in major World Cup fixtures.

Tuchel Has Never Hidden His Emotions

Animated behaviour on the touchline has long been part of Tuchel’s coaching style, and England’s World Cup campaign has offered several examples.

During the victory over DR Congo, the England boss reacted furiously after Brian Cipenga’s early goal beat Jordan Pickford at the near post, throwing a water bottle in frustration.

Earlier in the tournament against Croatia, Tuchel was seen openly criticising Pickford’s distribution before quickly calling over Noni Madueke to deliver tactical instructions just minutes into the match.

His emotional reactions have become a familiar feature of England’s games, reflecting a manager who is rarely reserved during matches.

Squad Harmony Has Shaped Tuchel’s Selection Decisions

Tuchel previously defended several notable omissions from his World Cup squad, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, explaining that maintaining balance and harmony within the group played a significant role in his selection decisions.

Terry’s comments, however, introduced another perspective by suggesting that managing personalities may also influence which players are chosen.

He speculated that younger or less established footballers may be easier for Tuchel to challenge publicly than experienced stars with stronger standing inside the dressing room.

A History of Strong Personalities and Strong Opinions

Tuchel’s demanding approach has occasionally led to tension throughout his coaching career.

The German has experienced well-documented disagreements with high-profile figures including Antonio Conte, Kylian Mbappe and Romelu Lukaku.

During his spell at Chelsea, reports also suggested relationships with sections of the dressing room deteriorated as time progressed.

More recently, Tuchel faced criticism after remarks in which he revealed that his mother found Jude Bellingham’s behaviour “repulsive.”

Although he later apologised, his strict management of the Real Madrid midfielder—including leaving him out of previous England camps—has coincided with strong performances when selected.

As England continue their World Cup journey, Terry’s comments have reignited debate over whether Tuchel’s intense coaching style motivates his players or risks sending mixed messages within the squad.
