Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned what he described as a deadly Russian drone attack on a civilian minibus in the southern city of Kherson, saying the incident highlights the dangers faced daily by residents living near the front lines.
According to Zelensky, the strike occurred on Tuesday morning when an FPV (first-person-view) drone allegedly targeted a passenger minibus in the city.
The Ukrainian leader said four people were killed and five others were injured in the attack.
Investigation underway at the scene
Emergency services and investigators were deployed to the location following the incident.
Zelensky said authorities were working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the strike, but stressed that the vehicle involved was a civilian bus.
Officials have not yet released additional details about the victims or the identities of those killed and wounded.
The claims were made by Ukrainian authorities and had not been independently verified at the time of the statement.
Zelensky describes attack as part of wider pattern
The Ukrainian president said the incident was another example of what he characterized as a prolonged campaign of attacks against civilians in the Kherson region.
He described the alleged targeting of civilians as having reached levels beyond what most people could imagine, arguing that residents in frontline communities continue to face constant threats from drone and artillery attacks.
Kherson, which lies close to active combat zones and the Dnipro River front line, has repeatedly come under attack since Ukrainian forces regained control of the city in late 2022.
Renewed appeal for military assistance
Using the attack as an example of the security challenges facing Ukraine, Zelensky renewed calls for additional military assistance from international partners.
He argued that delays in supplying defensive equipment have allowed Russia to maintain pressure on vulnerable frontline areas.
According to the Ukrainian president, stronger support for Ukraine’s defense forces remains necessary to protect civilians living in regions exposed to regular attacks.
Calls for greater pressure on Russia
Zelensky also urged Ukraine’s allies to continue increasing pressure on Moscow through sanctions and other measures.
He thanked countries that have continued to provide military aid packages and implement new restrictions against Russia.
The Ukrainian leader said sustained international support remains critical as Ukraine seeks to defend its territory and protect civilians from ongoing attacks.
Frontline communities remain under threat
The latest reported strike underscores the continuing risks faced by civilians living in Ukraine’s frontline regions, where attacks involving drones, artillery and missiles remain frequent.
As investigations continue into the Kherson incident, Ukrainian officials say the attack serves as another reminder of the human cost of the war and the challenges confronting communities located close to active combat areas.
