Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has expressed his excitement over Mykhailo Mudryk’s return to the squad, admitting the club was caught by surprise when the winger’s doping suspension ended earlier than expected.
The Ukrainian international is now set to reunite with his teammates during Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Hong Kong after spending months away from competitive football.
Although Alonso is eager to begin working with the 25-year-old, he insists it is still too early to determine what role Mudryk will play this season.
Surprise Decision Ends Lengthy Absence
Mudryk has not featured for Chelsea since November 2024 after being suspended over a failed doping test.
His career was placed on hold shortly after the charge, leaving the winger sidelined throughout a crucial stage of his development.
The situation changed after updated scientific guidance prompted the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to raise the reporting threshold used in testing.
The revised standards were designed to ensure that reported positive samples exceed the minimum reporting level with greater certainty.
While the exact cause of the test result has never been definitively established, it is believed the exposure occurred while Mudryk was on international duty with Ukraine in September 2024.
Chelsea Delighted by Unexpected News
Speaking after Chelsea’s 2-1 pre-season defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Sydney, Alonso admitted the club had not anticipated the positive outcome.
He said everyone at Chelsea was thrilled that Mudryk would now be able to train with the squad again, describing the development as an important moment for both the player and the club.
The Spanish coach added that the priority is to help Mudryk feel welcomed after such a difficult period away from the team.

Long before Mudryk arrived in west London for a reported £89 million transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023, Alonso had admired the winger’s qualities.

Mudryk is expected to link up with Chelsea in Hong Kong, although Alonso revealed he has not yet spoken personally with the player ahead of his arrival.
The manager also refused to speculate over the winger’s long-term future, including suggestions that he could leave on loan this summer, potentially joining Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg.
Instead, Alonso said every decision will depend on Mudryk’s physical condition, match sharpness and how quickly he adapts after his prolonged absence.

With Mudryk under contract until 2031 after signing an eight-and-a-half-year deal upon his arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk, Chelsea are under no immediate pressure to rush him back into first-team action.
