Chelsea have officially announced the signing of Argentine defender and midfielder Valentin Barco, completing the 22-year-old’s move from sister club Strasbourg on a seven-year contract.
The highly rated Argentine becomes the latest addition to Chelsea’s busy summer transfer window as the Premier League club continues reshaping its squad ahead of the new season.
Barco Set to Join Squad After Extended Break
Barco is not expected to report immediately for pre-season duties after representing Argentina at the recent FIFA World Cup. His involvement in the tournament means he will join Chelsea later than many of his new teammates.
Capable of playing both at left-back and in midfield, the youngster arrives with experience gained across Argentina, England, Spain, and France.
World Cup Incident Brought Barco Into the Spotlight
Although Barco featured only briefly during Argentina’s World Cup campaign, he became one of the tournament’s talking points following the dramatic semi-final victory over England.
The Argentine sprinted onto the pitch after Enzo Fernández scored a late equalizer, appearing to celebrate directly in front of England’s players. The incident prompted defender John Stones to shove him before tensions continued after Lautaro Martínez’s winning goal.
Following the final whistle, Barco was also involved in a confrontation with Jude Bellingham, who reacted as Argentina celebrated its victory. Reports also claimed Barco had spent much of the match provoking members of England’s bench.
Career Progression Across Europe
Barco began his professional career with Boca Juniors, making his senior debut at just 16 years old before emerging as one of Argentina’s most promising young talents.
His performances earned him a move to Brighton in 2024, but opportunities proved limited in the Premier League. Loan spells at Sevilla and Strasbourg followed before the French club completed a permanent transfer in February 2025.
Breakthrough Season in France
The Argentine enjoyed an impressive campaign with Strasbourg, contributing 12 combined goals and assists as the club secured qualification for European competition.
His performances in Ligue 1 helped earn him a place in Argentina’s World Cup squad, where he made a substitute appearance during the group stage.
Chelsea Continue Squad Rebuild
Barco’s arrival follows the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, with Chelsea also continuing negotiations to strengthen the left side of the squad through a potential move for Rayo Vallecano wing-back Pep Chavarría.
The Argentine becomes Chelsea’s seventh signing of the summer transfer window, joining Danny Welbeck, Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Geovany Quenda, Marco Palestra, and Emmanuel Emegha.

The transfer also extends the growing player pathway between Chelsea and Strasbourg under BlueCo’s multi-club ownership model.
Barco is the 13th player to move between the two clubs since BlueCo acquired Strasbourg in 2023, further highlighting the close relationship between the Premier League side and its French affiliate.
