Polokwane City head coach Willy Moloto has resigned, just one day after returning to the club’s training sessions following an extended absence caused by health complications.
Moloto had been away from the team since September, when he experienced a medical emergency during Polokwane City’s Betway Premiership match against AmaZulu FC at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on 19 September 2026.
The match ended in a 1-0 defeat for Rise and Shine. During the encounter, a member of the technical team helped Moloto to the dressing room while the game continued.
He reportedly collapsed shortly afterwards and was taken to a private hospital in Polokwane, where he spent a week receiving treatment.
Coach Resigns After First Training Session Back
After remaining away from his coaching responsibilities while recovering, Moloto returned to training on Monday, 2 November, for the first time since his hospitalisation.
However, his return was short-lived. He submitted his resignation the following day and was absent from Tuesday’s training session at Polokwane Rugby Club, where the team conducts its preparations.
FARPost understands that Moloto has also said goodbye to some of the players, signalling the end of his latest spell with the club.
His absence had seen him miss Polokwane City’s previous three fixtures across the Betway Premiership and Carling Knockout Cup.
Second Departure From Polokwane City
Moloto’s resignation represents his second departure from Rise and Shine. He previously left the club alongside co-coach Innocent Mayoyo during the 2021/22 season, when Polokwane City was competing in the National First Division.
Following that departure, he worked with Kwanele Kopo at Pretoria Callies, having previously served alongside him at the University of Pretoria.
Moloto also had a spell with Ghanaian club Real Academicals in 2024.
Interim Technical Team Took Charge During His Absence
Mkhuseli Sentane was placed in charge of Polokwane City during Moloto’s absence, with assistance from Mpho Ndlovu.
The interim technical team oversaw three matches, recording two defeats against Siwelele FC in the league and Carling Knockout Cup, as well as a goalless draw with TS Galaxy.
Polokwane City’s next fixture is scheduled for 24 November, leaving the club with time during the FIFA international break to consider its options for the coaching position.
Phuti Mohafe Linked With Possible Return
Former Polokwane City coach Phuti Mohafe has been linked with a possible return after being seen in the VIP section during the club’s Carling Knockout encounter against Siwelele.
However, Mohafe has since dismissed speculation that he could return to the coaching role.
The club now faces the task of determining its next steps following Moloto’s resignation.
