Delta State has received praise from two key federal agencies for its efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and responsible management of public resources.
The commendation came during a visit by officials of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to the Delta State Government House in Asaba on Wednesday.
The delegation met with Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, who represented Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
According to the agencies, Delta has demonstrated a willingness to subject its governance processes to independent scrutiny, a move they described as a significant step toward strengthening public trust.
Delta’s Peer Review Decision Draws Attention
Speaking during the visit, Director-General of the BPP, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, said Delta State had distinguished itself by voluntarily allowing the ICPC to assess and review aspects of its governance framework.
He noted that such openness is uncommon among sub-national governments and reflects confidence in the state’s administrative systems.
Adedokun explained that the peer review process aligns with internationally recognized standards of accountability and serves as a model for other states seeking to improve transparency in public administration.
Stronger States, Stronger Nation
The BPP chief emphasized the importance of effective governance at the state level, noting that prudent management of public funds contributes to national development.
According to him, when states efficiently utilize their resources and successfully implement projects, the federal government is better positioned to concentrate on broader responsibilities, including national security and defence.
He stressed that strengthening accountability mechanisms across all levels of government remains essential to achieving sustainable development and improving service delivery to citizens.
Renewed Hope Agenda Drives Collaboration
Adedokun also revealed that the engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by the BPP to deepen cooperation with state and local governments nationwide.
He said the initiative is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive encouraging closer collaboration between federal institutions and sub-national administrations under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The objective, he explained, is to improve procurement practices, enhance budget execution, and ensure that public projects are delivered efficiently and in accordance with established standards.
Commitment to Better Project Delivery
Beyond acknowledging Delta’s efforts, the BPP pledged continued support for states seeking to improve their procurement and project implementation processes.
Adedokun stated that the agency intends to maintain regular engagement with governments across the country, creating opportunities to exchange ideas, identify challenges, and adopt proven strategies for delivering capital projects successfully.
He added that sharing best practices among states would help strengthen governance structures and improve the overall quality of public infrastructure and services.
Delta Reaffirms Focus on Quality and Accountability
Responding on behalf of the state government, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme welcomed the delegation and reiterated Delta’s commitment to maintaining high standards in project execution.
He stated that the administration places significant emphasis on ensuring that public funds are used responsibly and that projects deliver real value to residents.
Onyeme stressed that the government would continue working closely with both the BPP and the ICPC to strengthen institutional systems and promote more efficient resource utilization.

The Deputy Governor expressed confidence that the discussions and engagements with the visiting agencies would further enhance the state’s governance framework.
He maintained that Delta State remains committed to rejecting poor-quality project delivery and will continue pursuing reforms aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and value for money in public spending.
The visit concluded with both federal agencies and state officials expressing optimism that closer cooperation would contribute to stronger governance practices and more effective development outcomes across Delta State.
