The Federal Government has unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at accelerating gender equality and reducing longstanding disparities affecting women and girls across the country.
Developed in partnership with the African Development Bank and UN Women, the newly launched Nigeria Gender Profile and Roadmap to Equality 2030 is expected to guide policies and interventions designed to advance equal opportunities and inclusive development over the next several years.
Evidence-Based Framework for National Progress
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim said the document offers a detailed assessment of the current state of gender equality in Nigeria while providing a practical blueprint for achieving national targets by 2030.
According to the minister, the profile was designed not only to highlight existing challenges but also to identify realistic and measurable actions that can help bridge gender gaps across key sectors.
She noted that the roadmap provides policymakers and stakeholders with reliable data needed to drive meaningful change and monitor progress over time.
Gender Equality Viewed as Economic Investment
Sulaiman-Ibrahim emphasized that expanding opportunities for women should be seen as a strategic development priority rather than a social obligation alone.
She argued that ensuring equal access to education, financial resources, leadership positions and security would produce benefits extending beyond individual women and girls, strengthening families, communities and the broader economy.
The minister stressed that national prosperity and social stability are closely linked to the empowerment of women, making gender equality a critical component of sustainable development.
Existing Programmes Already Reaching Thousands
The government says implementation efforts are already underway through a number of ongoing initiatives focused on women’s empowerment and social inclusion.
Among them are the Renewed Hope Social Impact Interventions and the Nigeria for Women Programme, which officials say have collectively supported more than 560,000 women nationwide.
These programmes are expected to play a significant role in advancing the objectives outlined in the new roadmap.
AfDB Says Gender Gap Is Holding Back Growth
Representing the African Development Bank Group, Abdul Kamara described gender equality as a crucial economic issue rather than simply a social concern.
He warned that persistent inequalities in education, employment, access to finance and leadership opportunities continue to limit Nigeria’s economic potential and slow inclusive growth.
According to Kamara, reducing these disparities could generate substantial economic gains, potentially increasing Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product by between two and three percent annually.
He described the potential impact as transformative, arguing that the country cannot afford to leave a significant portion of its population excluded from opportunities.
Focus Shifts From Promises to Action
While acknowledging that many commitments have already been made regarding gender equality, Kamara said the real challenge now lies in translating those promises into large-scale implementation.
He noted that the roadmap offers a practical framework for governments, investors and development partners seeking to promote sustainable and inclusive development.
The AfDB official added that greater participation of women in the workforce, entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership would strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
UN Women Calls for Collective Responsibility
Also addressing participants, the representative of UN Women in Nigeria and ECOWAS, Beatrice Eyong, represented by Dama Ghimire, highlighted the continuing barriers facing women despite their significant contributions to economic activity.
She noted that many women remain concentrated in low-income and informal sectors, while their representation in political leadership and decision-making roles remains limited.
According to the UN official, gender equality influences nearly every aspect of national development, from economic growth and democratic governance to climate resilience, peacebuilding and human capital development.
Roadmap Extends Beyond Government Agencies
Stakeholders emphasized that the success of the initiative will depend on broad collaboration across multiple sectors.
The roadmap is intended to guide not only the Ministry of Women Affairs but also federal and state governments, development institutions, private-sector organizations and civil society groups.
Officials stressed that achieving meaningful progress will require coordinated action, shared accountability and measurable outcomes across all levels of society.
New Phase Begins for Equality Goals
The launch of the Nigeria Gender Profile and Roadmap to Equality 2030 marks the beginning of what stakeholders describe as a new implementation phase focused on delivering tangible results.
The framework is expected to support Nigeria’s commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals and align with the country’s National Development Plan 2026–2030.
As government agencies and development partners begin putting the roadmap into action, attention will increasingly shift toward measuring progress and ensuring that commitments translate into real improvements in the lives of women and girls across the country.
