A reported drone attack targeting critical infrastructure at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was successfully prevented on July 30, according to a statement released by the plant’s administration.
Officials said the incident occurred near infrastructure associated with the facility’s spent nuclear fuel operations, raising concerns over the potential consequences had the attack succeeded.
UAV Detected Near Sensitive Nuclear Infrastructure
According to the statement, a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was detected within the grounds of the Russian-operated nuclear power plant, close to the dry spent nuclear fuel storage area.
The drone was reportedly found near a building that houses a specialized transporter used for moving containers of spent nuclear fuel.
Authorities said the explosive device carried by the drone was safely neutralized before it could detonate.
No Injuries or Damage Reported
Plant officials stated that the incident resulted in no casualties or physical damage to equipment or facilities.
Emergency personnel reportedly secured the area after the device was rendered safe, preventing any immediate threat to workers or the plant’s operations.
Despite the absence of damage, officials described the event as a serious security incident due to the nature of the infrastructure involved.
Specialized Equipment Described as Critical to Plant Operations
The statement emphasized that the transporter located near the drone is a unique piece of specialized equipment essential for handling spent nuclear fuel.
Officials warned that damage to the transporter could have disrupted scheduled transport and technological procedures involving spent fuel.
According to the plant administration, such a disruption could have complicated long-term operational safety by interfering with the facility’s ability to safely manage and transport spent nuclear fuel.

Plant representatives argued that the reported targeting of infrastructure connected to spent nuclear fuel handling underscores the potential risks posed by attacks on nuclear facilities.
They said any successful strike against such equipment could have created additional challenges for maintaining the long-term safe operation of the power plant.
The claims regarding the incident and responsibility for the reported attack originate from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant administration, which is operated by Russia‘s state nuclear corporation Rosatom.
