The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom held a telephone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, using the discussion to reinforce the growing partnership between the two countries and outline priorities for future cooperation.

Leaders Highlight Strong Bilateral Relationship

During the conversation, the UK Prime Minister emphasized the importance of the long-standing relationship between the United Kingdom and India, describing it as a partnership that continues to deliver meaningful benefits for communities across Britain.

He stressed his intention to build on that foundation by expanding cooperation in multiple sectors.

The call also focused on strengthening ties through the UK-India Vision 2035 framework, which both governments view as a roadmap for deeper collaboration over the coming decade.

The Prime Minister highlighted the value of maintaining strong cultural and people-to-people connections as a central part of the relationship.

Recognition of the Indian Community’s Contribution

The UK leader praised the significant role played by Indian communities throughout Britain, acknowledging their contribution to the country’s social, cultural, and economic life.

Prime Minister Modi responded by pointing to the historical and cultural links between the leaders’ respective home cities.

He noted the connection between Manchester in the UK and Ahmedabad in the Indian state of Gujarat, referring to Ahmedabad as the “Manchester of India” because of its industrial heritage.

Free Trade Agreement Seen as Economic Boost

Trade featured prominently in the discussions, with the Prime Minister highlighting the opportunities expected from the recently introduced Free Trade Agreement between the UK and India.

He said the agreement is designed to generate economic benefits for businesses, workers, and consumers in both countries while strengthening commercial ties between the two economies.

Technology Cooperation Remains a Priority

The leaders also explored opportunities to expand collaboration in advanced technologies.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to the UK-India Technology Security Initiative, describing it as an important platform for joint innovation.

Both sides agreed that emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, present significant opportunities for future cooperation and could become a key pillar of the bilateral partnership.

Middle East Security Discussed

Beyond bilateral issues, the two leaders exchanged views on developments in the Middle East.

They agreed on the importance of continued diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region.

The conversation also included discussion on the need to support the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, recognizing its importance for regional stability and international trade.

Plans for Continued Engagement

The call concluded with both leaders expressing their intention to remain in close contact.

They agreed to continue discussions in the near future and looked forward to meeting in person at the earliest suitable opportunity.
