Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced the launch of the Carpathian Initiative, a new regional cooperation platform designed to strengthen partnerships with neighboring countries in areas including economic development, security, humanitarian assistance, and post-war reconstruction.
Speaking during a discussion with Ukraine’s ambassadors, Zelenskyy said the initiative was created to provide an avenue for countries that may not be in a position to expand military assistance but remain committed to supporting Ukraine in other meaningful ways.
Expanding Support Beyond Military Aid
According to Zelenskyy, the new framework recognizes that many international partners are willing to contribute through humanitarian programs, economic cooperation, and security collaboration even if they are unable to provide additional weapons.
He said these countries are already looking toward Ukraine’s long-term recovery, describing their engagement as a sign of confidence that peace will eventually return to the country.
Shared Interests at the Heart of the Initiative
The Carpathian Initiative is intended to unite countries connected by both geography and common strategic interests centered around the Carpathian mountain region.
Zelenskyy explained that the partnership will focus on improving logistics networks, strengthening regional economies, enhancing security cooperation, and promoting broader collaboration that benefits participating nations.
He also highlighted cultural exchange and future tourism development as important elements of the initiative, emphasizing that the project is designed to foster long-term regional integration.
European Union Responds Positively
The Ukrainian president said he had presented the proposal to the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, adding that both welcomed the concept.
According to Zelenskyy, the European Union has already given a positive signal of support as discussions continue over the initiative’s implementation.
Launch Planned for the Autumn
Ukraine expects to formally launch the Carpathian Initiative this fall, with participating countries currently discussing the timing of the inaugural meeting.
Zelenskyy said future cooperation would include dedicated programs covering funding, tourism, economic development, and regional security as the initiative evolves.
Eight Countries Expected to Participate
The proposed partnership extends beyond Ukraine and is expected to include Romania, Austria, Serbia, Hungary, Poland, Czechia, and Slovakia.
Zelenskyy said the initiative is intended to become a platform that unites neighboring countries around shared economic opportunities, security interests, and long-term regional development while supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction and future stability.
