Nigeria’s National Revenue Service (NRS) has renewed its commitment to promoting voluntary tax compliance, stressing that educating taxpayers remains the cornerstone of creating a stronger and more sustainable revenue system.

The agency reaffirmed this position during the inaugural 2026 National Tax Awareness Day, an event held to review the impact of the country’s sweeping tax reforms one year after they came into effect.

Nationwide Campaign Focuses on Tax Education

The National Tax Awareness Day was designed to encourage Nigerians to better understand their tax obligations while promoting a culture of voluntary compliance.

According to a statement released by the NRS on Sunday, the campaign featured several educational and public engagement activities across the country.

Held under the theme “Tax Awareness for National Growth: Reform, Compliance and Shared Prosperity,” the initiative brought together tax practitioners, businesses, government institutions, students, civil society groups and members of the public.

The programme was coordinated through the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN)’s 49 district societies, covering all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, as well as the institute’s international districts in the United Kingdom and North America.

Anniversary Marks Progress Since Historic Tax Overhaul

The awareness campaign coincided with the first anniversary of the comprehensive tax reform package signed into law by President Bola Tinubu in 2025.

The reforms have been described by the revenue agency as a major milestone in modernising Nigeria’s tax administration by introducing a system that is more transparent, technology-driven, efficient and focused on improving services for taxpayers.

Officials noted that the anniversary provided an opportunity to evaluate the progress made while reinforcing the need for continued public participation in the tax system.

Communities Across Nigeria Join Awareness Activities

As part of the nationwide observance, CITN district societies organised a wide range of outreach programmes aimed at improving tax literacy.

These included roadshows, market sensitisation campaigns, tax clinics, stakeholder engagements, media appearances, school competitions and community education initiatives.

Organisers said the objective was to make tax information more accessible while encouraging greater compliance among individuals and businesses.

NRS and CITN Strengthen Partnership

One of the major highlights of the event was a courtesy visit by the President and Chairman of the CITN Council, Innocent Ohagwa, alongside members of the institute’s Governing Council, to the headquarters of the National Revenue Service in Abuja.

The delegation was welcomed by the Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Services, Mohammed Abubakar, who represented the Executive Chairman of the NRS, Zacch Adedeji.

During the meeting, both organisations reviewed developments since the implementation of the tax reforms and reaffirmed their commitment to working together to strengthen taxpayer education and improve revenue generation.

Voluntary Compliance Described as Key to Sustainable Revenue

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Abubakar praised the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria for establishing National Tax Awareness Day and mobilising its nationwide network to promote tax education.

He emphasised that voluntary compliance remains the foundation of an effective tax system, adding that sustained public awareness is essential for generating the revenue required to support national development and shared economic prosperity.

Abubakar also said the ongoing reforms are intended to create a tax administration that is transparent, efficient, technology-enabled and responsive to the needs of taxpayers while simplifying compliance processes.

CITN Commends Digital Transformation

In his remarks, Ohagwa expressed appreciation to the National Revenue Service for its continued collaboration in implementing Nigeria’s tax reform agenda.

He described National Tax Awareness Day as a coordinated national effort to improve tax literacy and encourage wider public participation in the country’s evolving tax system.

The CITN president also applauded the agency’s investment in digital solutions, particularly the recently introduced Rev360 platform, saying the technology would improve efficiency, transparency and the overall taxpayer experience.

Collaboration Seen as Driver of Economic Growth

The NRS noted that the event highlighted the growing partnership between the revenue agency, the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria and other stakeholders committed to strengthening Nigeria’s tax culture.

According to the statement, both institutions remain focused on expanding taxpayer engagement, improving service delivery and encouraging voluntary compliance as critical components of sustainable economic growth.

Government Targets Higher Revenue Through Reforms

President Bola Tinubu signed four major tax reform laws in June 2025, including the Nigeria Tax Act, replacing decades-old tax legislation with a modern legal framework designed to improve revenue collection and simplify tax administration.

The reforms form part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to strengthen domestic revenue generation and reduce dependence on borrowing.

In line with those ambitions, the National Revenue Service has set a revenue target of ₦40.7 trillion for 2026.

The projection represents a 44 percent increase over the ₦28.29 trillion collected in 2025 and is more than six times the ₦6.4 trillion generated in 2021.

The agency believes stronger non-oil revenue, expanded tax compliance, digital automation and stricter enforcement will play a central role in achieving the ambitious target.
