Orlando Pirates have surged back to the top of the Betway Premiership after producing a commanding 3-0 victory over Chippa United in Durban on Sunday.

The result moved the Buccaneers above Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs, giving their supporters another reason to celebrate the intense battle for early-season supremacy.

Lungu Sets Pirates on Their Way

Pirates established control when Gamphani Lungu opened the scoring, putting Abdeslam Ouaddou’s team in front.

Lebone Seema then extended the advantage, leaving Chippa United with a difficult task of mounting a comeback.

With Pirates already two goals ahead, their supporters began demanding a third goal that would ensure their team moved above Chiefs at the top of the standings.

Msendami Delivers the Decisive Blow

Daniel Msendami answered the call by finding the net for the first time since joining Pirates.

His goal completed a convincing 3-0 victory and provided the perfect response to the Buccaneers’ frustrating 1-1 draw against AmaZulu in midweek.

The emphatic result also ensured Pirates would finish the weekend at the summit.

Chiefs Drop to Second Despite Remaining Unbeaten

Pirates benefited from Kaizer Chiefs’ 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

Both Soweto giants have now collected seven points from their opening three league matches, with each side recording two victories and one draw.

The difference between them is goal difference, with Pirates taking first place after their three-goal triumph over Chippa.

Pirates Fans Turn Up the Rivalry

Pirates supporters quickly took to social media to celebrate their team’s return to the top while taking playful aim at their biggest rivals.

One supporter joked that Pirates had not only climbed the standings but had also “taken Chiefs’ WiFi,” adding that there was supposedly “no signal from Naturena.”

Another fan mocked Chiefs supporters by suggesting they might still be refreshing the league table in the hope that Pirates’ position was simply a loading error.

The rivalry was further highlighted by supporters pointing out how closely matched the two clubs currently are after three matches.

Petersen Becomes Part of the Banter

The online celebrations also brought Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen into the conversation.

One Pirates supporter blamed Petersen for contributing to Chiefs’ struggles and joked that the more goals Pirates scored, the more frustrating the situation became for the goalkeeper’s critics.

The comments underscored how quickly the early-season title race has reignited the traditional rivalry between the two Soweto giants.

Pirates Send an Early Warning

While the league campaign remains in its early stages, Pirates’ latest performance has sent a clear message to their rivals.

After dropping points against AmaZulu in midweek, the Buccaneers responded with a comprehensive victory when it mattered most.

With both Pirates and Chiefs sitting on seven points, the battle at the top of the Betway Premiership is already becoming one of the major talking points of the new season.
