He Faked His Own Death, Fooled Two Countries—Now the Convicted Rapist’s Story Has Ended in Shocking Fashion

A man whose years-long attempt to evade prosecution included staging his own death and assuming multiple identities has died while in custody in Utah.

Nicholas Rossi, 38, passed away Thursday night at a local hospital after suffering complications linked to an existing medical condition, according to the Utah Department of Corrections.

Officials also stated that Rossi had chosen to discontinue the medical treatment that was being provided before his death.

Elaborate Escape Included Fake Obituary

Rossi, whose legal name was Nicholas Alahverdian, became the subject of international attention after investigators discovered he had orchestrated an elaborate deception to avoid facing rape charges in the United States.

In early 2020, shortly after prosecutors charged him in one of the sexual assault cases, an online obituary appeared claiming he had died from non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The announcement was entirely false.

Rather than being deceased, Rossi had quietly relocated to the United Kingdom, where he managed to remain out of the public eye for an extended period.

Authorities have never publicly established the exact date he left the United States.

DNA Evidence Revived Decade-Old Investigation

The criminal case against Rossi stemmed from two rapes committed in northern Utah in 2008.

For years, the identity of the attacker remained unknown until investigators revisited DNA evidence collected during the original investigations.

In 2018, advances in forensic work led authorities to identify Rossi as the suspect.

He was later prosecuted and, last year, convicted of raping both women.

Arrest Came After Hospital Staff Recognized Him

Rossi’s attempt to remain hidden unraveled in December 2021 after he was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow while receiving treatment for Covid-19.

Hospital staff reportedly noticed his distinctive tattoos and alerted law enforcement, leading to his arrest.

Even after being taken into custody, Rossi insisted investigators had detained the wrong person.

Claimed He Was an Irish Orphan

Throughout the lengthy legal battle that followed, Rossi denied being the American fugitive authorities were seeking.

Instead, he claimed he was an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight who had been mistakenly identified.

Scottish courts ultimately rejected that argument.

In November 2022, judges concluded he was indeed Nicholas Rossi, paving the way for his extradition.

After exhausting legal challenges, he was returned to the United States in January of last year.

Multiple Identities Helped Him Stay Hidden

Court proceedings later revealed that Rossi had used more than a dozen different identities over the years in an effort to avoid detection.

Among those aliases was Arthur Brown, the name he reportedly used when he married British woman Miranda Knight.

The pair are believed to have first met while living in Bristol before relocating together to Glasgow, where Rossi remained until his arrest.

Victims Described Lasting Trauma

During sentencing proceedings last August, one of the women Rossi was convicted of raping spoke about the profound and permanent impact his actions had on her life.

She told the court that he had left behind “a trail of fear, pain and destruction,” stressing that her statement was not motivated by revenge but by a desire for accountability and public safety.

She added that the emotional wounds caused by the assaults would never fully heal.

Prosecutors Warned He Remained a Public Danger

Lead prosecutor Brandon Simmons argued that Rossi posed an ongoing threat, telling the court that he used sexual violence as a means of controlling women.

Despite the overwhelming evidence presented during trial, Rossi continued to deny committing the crimes.

Speaking quietly during his sentencing hearing, he insisted he was innocent and claimed both women had fabricated the allegations against him.

A Case That Drew International Attention

Rossi’s extraordinary efforts to escape justice—including fabricating his own death, living under false identities across the United Kingdom, and fighting extradition for years—made his case one of the most unusual fugitive investigations in recent memory.

His death brings an end to a saga that spanned multiple countries, years of legal proceedings, and one of the most elaborate attempts to evade prosecution in recent history.
