Kelly Ripa’s ‘Healthy’ Habit Backfires as Excessive Tooth Brushing Leads to Gum Surgery

Kelly Ripa has revealed that a habit she considered both beneficial and excessive ultimately contributed to gum recession that required surgery.

The television personality discussed the issue during an episode of her podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera, while speaking with Michelle Buteau, creator and star of Survival of the Thickest.

Ripa explained that she has long brushed her teeth more frequently than generally recommended, describing the habit as something that had positive intentions but ultimately caused problems.

Excessive Brushing Took a Toll

According to Ripa, repeated brushing contributed to recession in part of her gums.

She said her dentist had first recommended corrective treatment around five years ago, but she chose to postpone the procedure at the time.

That decision eventually became harder to maintain, as her doctor later advised that waiting any longer was no longer a sensible option.

The procedure involved restoring the affected gum tissue, commonly through a grafting approach designed to provide greater coverage around the teeth.

Recovery Forced Ripa Off Live Television

The dental surgery had an unexpected impact on Ripa’s television schedule.

Her recovery required her to significantly limit how much she spoke, meaning she was unable to participate in several live episodes of Live with Kelly and Mark, the morning programme she co-hosts with her husband, Mark Consuelos.

For someone whose professional life revolves around conversation and live broadcasting, the restriction created an unusual challenge.

Consuelos Reveals How Difficult Silence Was

Consuelos discussed Ripa’s recovery while appearing on the programme with musician Nick Jonas.

He explained that one of the key post-operative instructions was for Ripa to keep talking to a minimum, something he suggested was particularly difficult for his wife.

Jonas also recognised the irony of asking a highly conversational person to remain quiet during recovery.

Consuelos said he had been helping monitor Ripa at home as she recovered from the procedure.

Ripa Asked Her Husband to Check the Surgery

At one point, Ripa asked Consuelos to look at the area where the procedure had been performed.

Rather than touching or interfering with the surgical site, he examined it from a distance and told her that it appeared to be healing properly.

The exchange highlighted the extent to which the dental procedure temporarily disrupted the couple’s normal routine.

Pain Was Unusual for Ripa

Consuelos also noted that Ripa’s recovery appeared more uncomfortable than her usual experiences at the dentist.

He explained that she generally has little sensitivity during dental appointments and is often comfortable proceeding without local anaesthetic.

The surgical recovery, however, was noticeably different, with Ripa experiencing significant discomfort while the affected area healed.

What Causes Gum Recession?

Gum recession occurs when gum tissue gradually pulls away from the teeth, potentially exposing parts of the tooth root that are normally protected.

A range of factors can contribute to the condition. These can include aggressive brushing, excessive mechanical irritation, genetics and periodontal disease.

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the recession.

In some cases, dentists may recommend gum grafting or another surgical procedure to restore tissue coverage.

Ripa’s Experience Highlights the Importance of Technique

Ripa’s account serves as a reminder that even habits generally associated with good oral hygiene can become problematic when performed too aggressively or excessively.

Brushing remains an important part of maintaining oral health, but excessive pressure or repeated mechanical irritation can potentially damage gum tissue.

Her experience ultimately led to a procedure she had initially postponed for years, followed by a recovery period that temporarily kept her away from live television.
