Manchester United’s Transfer Plans in Chaos as Ugarte Suffers Devastating World Cup Injury

Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte sustained a ligament injury to his left knee while representing Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup.

The setback occurred during Uruguay’s 1-0 group-stage defeat to Spain in Guadalajara, a result that ended Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s hopes of progressing in the tournament.

Ugarte left the pitch on a stretcher after appearing to awkwardly twist his knee and was visibly emotional as medical staff assisted him from the field.

Club Awaiting Full Medical Assessment

Although the injury has been identified as ligament damage, United have not yet disclosed which specific ligament has been affected or the severity of the problem.

In a statement, the Premier League club explained that medical specialists are continuing to evaluate the injury before deciding on the most appropriate treatment plan and estimating how long the Uruguayan international will be unavailable.

Manchester United also expressed their support for the midfielder, wishing him a successful recovery and pledging to assist him throughout the rehabilitation process.

Injury Raises Fresh Questions Over Ugarte’s Future

Beyond concerns over the player‘s health, the injury has created fresh uncertainty regarding Ugarte’s future at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old had been viewed as one of the players United were prepared to sell during the summer transfer window after struggling to establish himself as a regular starter since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth up to £50.5 million two years ago.

Limited opportunities last season further fueled speculation that the club could cash in if a suitable offer arrived.

Midfield Competition Reduced His Playing Time

Ugarte found himself slipping down the pecking order as United’s midfield evolved.

Under Ruben Amorim, Bruno Fernandes was regularly partnered with Casemiro in central midfield, while Amorim’s successor, Michael Carrick, later restored Kobbie Mainoo alongside the experienced Brazilian.

As a result, Ugarte managed only 10 starts across all competitions during the previous campaign, making it increasingly difficult for him to cement a long-term role within the squad.

United Continue Major Midfield Overhaul

Despite Ugarte’s uncertain future, Manchester United remain active in reshaping their midfield ahead of the new season.

The club have already reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Brazilian midfielder Ederson in a deal worth around £39 million, with the transfer expected to be completed once the player returns from the World Cup.

At the same time, negotiations continue with West Ham over highly-rated Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

Fernandes Pursuit Faces Competition

Securing Fernandes will not be straightforward for United.

West Ham are believed to value the 21-year-old at between £80 million and £85 million, while Tottenham are also attempting to sign the midfielder.

Although reports suggest Fernandes is open to joining Manchester United and personal terms are unlikely to present difficulties, convincing West Ham to sanction a sale remains the biggest hurdle.

Alternative Targets Already Identified

Should negotiations for Fernandes collapse, United have reportedly assembled a shortlist of alternative midfield options.

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is said to be among the leading candidates, while Aurelien Tchouameni, Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton are also under consideration as potential additions.

The club remains determined to strengthen its midfield regardless of how the Fernandes talks conclude.

Injury Could Affect Summer Transfer Plans

The uncertainty surrounding Ugarte’s recovery may significantly influence Manchester United’s transfer strategy.

If the midfielder requires an extended rehabilitation period, finding a buyer during the current transfer window could become extremely difficult.

That would reduce the club’s chances of generating additional transfer funds through his departure.

United had hoped to reinvest money from player sales into further squad improvements, including the possible arrival of a third central midfielder alongside reinforcements on the left side of the team and a backup goalkeeper.

Those ambitions may now need to be reassessed depending on Ugarte’s recovery timeline.

FIFA Compensation Offers Some Financial Relief

While the injury presents both sporting and financial challenges, Manchester United are expected to receive compensation through FIFA’s Club Protection Programme.

The scheme covers players injured while on international duty and can reimburse clubs for wages of up to £120,000 per week during the player’s absence, offering some financial protection as Ugarte begins what could be a lengthy recovery.
