Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her longtime fiancé, Riley Roberts, have reportedly ended their romantic relationship after more than a decade together, according to people familiar with the couple cited in the report.

Neither Ocasio-Cortez nor Roberts has publicly confirmed the reported breakup. The congresswoman has also declined to comment publicly on the claims.

Political Rise Put Relationship Under Growing Pressure

People who knew the couple described their relationship as affectionate but increasingly complicated as Ocasio-Cortez’s political career expanded dramatically.

One former Democratic operative claimed the congresswoman had been taking a break from dating while concentrating on her political future. The source also suggested that Ocasio-Cortez could eventually pursue a Senate seat in New York rather than immediately seek the presidency in 2028.

A former Capitol Hill associate who socialized with the pair suggested that the congresswoman’s growing prominence may have created a difficult power imbalance.

From College Romance to Washington Power Couple

Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts reportedly first met while attending Boston University, where they participated in a student discussion group focused on politics and debate.

Although they briefly separated after college when Roberts returned to Arizona, the pair later reunited around 2015. Roberts subsequently moved to New York as Ocasio-Cortez’s political ambitions gained momentum.

He supported her during her breakthrough 2018 congressional campaign, when she defeated longtime Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley and became the youngest woman elected to Congress at the time.

Engagement Never Led to a Wedding

The couple became engaged in April 2022 during a trip to Puerto Rico, but Ocasio-Cortez said they were not rushing to marry.

Years later, the couple still had not tied the knot. Their prolonged engagement also placed Roberts in an unusual position within the congresswoman’s political world because he was her fiancé rather than her legal spouse.

Ocasio-Cortez has previously spoken about the challenges successful women can face in relationships, including the possibility that some men may struggle when their partners become more professionally prominent.

Roberts Faced Scrutiny Over Political Perks

Roberts’ proximity to Ocasio-Cortez’s congressional operation has repeatedly attracted political scrutiny.

In 2019, critics questioned why Roberts appeared to have an official House email address. Ocasio-Cortez’s office said he was not a congressional employee and explained that the account allowed him to access her calendar.

A separate complaint alleged that her campaign improperly paid Roberts approximately $6,000. The payments were ultimately deemed legitimate, with no penalties imposed.

Met Gala and Italy Trip Added to Controversy

Further questions emerged after Roberts accompanied Ocasio-Cortez to the 2021 Met Gala, where she wore her widely publicized “Tax the Rich” dress.

The event later became the subject of a House Ethics Committee investigation. The committee concluded that any violations were not “knowing and willful,” but Ocasio-Cortez was required to reimburse expenses associated with the event, including the value of Roberts’ ticket and meal.

Roberts also accompanied her on an official trip to Italy in 2022 and received travel-related benefits as her spouse, prompting further criticism over the couple’s status.

Former Associates Say the Relationship Was Genuine

Despite the controversies, former associates have described the relationship as genuine and supportive.

One former Ocasio-Cortez staffer compared the pair’s affection to that of longtime married couples, saying that when their relationship was working, it was beautiful.

Another source said the couple have remained close despite reportedly ending their romantic relationship and continue to spend time together, including dining together.

Breakup Comes Amid Fresh Political Speculation

The reported split comes as Ocasio-Cortez faces renewed speculation about her long-term political ambitions.

She has increasingly been mentioned as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, while the possibility of a future Senate campaign in New York has also been raised by people familiar with her political trajectory.

Questions about her relationship intensified after she was seen without her engagement ring. She has also spoken publicly about freezing her eggs, describing the decision as something that made her feel more in control of her life, although she has not said the procedure was connected to the reported breakup.

Neither Side Has Confirmed the Split

Roberts has largely remained outside the political spotlight throughout Ocasio-Cortez’s rise to national prominence, and neither he nor the congresswoman has confirmed that their engagement has ended.

Ocasio-Cortez’s mother, Blanca Ocasio-Cortez, also declined to discuss the couple’s status when approached.

If the reports are accurate, the separation would mark the end of a relationship that began during their university years and continued through Ocasio-Cortez’s extraordinary transformation from political newcomer to one of the most recognizable figures in American progressive politics.
