A fatal traffic collision in eastern North Carolina has intensified scrutiny over immigration enforcement after federal authorities announced charges against a Mexican national who had allegedly re-entered the United States multiple times following previous deportations.
The crash claimed the life of a six-year-old girl whose family says she dreamed of becoming a ballerina.
Federal Indictment Follows Deadly Collision
Federal prosecutors announced that a grand jury indicted 33-year-old Jamie Santiago-Corona on July 22 for illegal re-entry after deportation.
According to the US Attorney’s Office, the indictment stems from allegations that Corona unlawfully returned to the United States despite having been removed from the country on three previous occasions.
Authorities identified the earlier deportations as taking place on October 9, 2019, June 12, 2023, and June 17, 2024.
If convicted of the federal immigration offense, he could receive a prison sentence of up to two years before once again being deported.
Crash Investigation Details
The federal immigration case follows a deadly road accident that occurred on July 3 in Pitt County, North Carolina.
Investigators say Corona allegedly drove through a stop sign before colliding with another vehicle carrying Kelli Toler and her two children as the family headed out for lunch before spending the afternoon at a swimming pool.
The impact proved fatal for six-year-old Calli Toler, who died at the scene. Her mother and four-year-old brother survived but sustained serious injuries and required medical treatment.
State Charges and Immigration Hold
Following the collision, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol charged Corona with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle along with additional traffic-related offenses connected to the crash.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) later filed a detainer request, asking state authorities to keep him in custody while federal immigration proceedings continue.
Community Rallies Around Grieving Family
In the aftermath of the tragedy, friends and supporters launched an online fundraising campaign to help the Toler family manage funeral expenses, medical costs, and other unexpected financial burdens.
The campaign described the devastating emotional toll of losing a child while recovering from serious injuries, stating that no family should face overwhelming financial hardship during such profound grief. By Wednesday afternoon, donations had approached $44,000.
Remembering a Child Who Loved to Dance
Calli Toler was remembered by relatives, friends, and educators as an energetic and joyful child whose greatest passion was dance.
She attended Chicod Elementary School in Greenville, where those who knew her described her as someone who “smiled and danced through life.”
Her obituary also highlighted her love of church activities, arts and crafts, T-ball, cuddling with family, and spending time with her younger brother. She adored her pet rabbit, BunBun, and the family’s dog, Dixie.
Dance Community Pays Emotional Tribute
Members of Calli’s dance studio shared heartfelt messages celebrating the young dancer’s bright personality and lasting impact.
The studio noted that she was also the cousin of one of its instructors, making the loss especially personal for the dance community.
Students and their families were encouraged to honor her memory by wearing bright or sparkling clothing that reflected her cheerful spirit, describing Calli as a child who brought light, love, and joy both in the studio and on stage.
Family Says Final Goodbye
Funeral services for Calli were held on July 10 in Vanceboro before she was laid to rest.
As federal immigration proceedings and the state criminal case move forward, her death continues to resonate throughout the local community, where tributes have focused on preserving the memory of a little girl whose love of dance and vibrant personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
