An 18-year-old teenager sent his mother a heartfelt message saying he had experienced the “best weekend of his life” shortly before a tragic accident claimed his life on a railway track in Kent.
Charlie Hearne-Kingsford, from Walderslade, died after falling onto a live railway line at Strood station on March 8 while heavily intoxicated.
An inquest at Maidstone heard that the teenager had been returning home after spending the weekend with friends at a rave in Tottenham, north London.
CCTV Captured Moments Before Fatal Fall at Strood Station
Witnesses at the station described seeing Charlie appearing “unsteady on his feet” after leaving the train.
CCTV footage later showed him walking towards the station exit before losing his balance and falling onto the tracks.
Emergency services were called at around 4.10pm, but despite efforts to save him, Charlie was pronounced dead approximately 40 minutes later.
Coroner Patricia Harding concluded that his death was accidental, caused by electrocution from the live rail.
Family Remembers Charlie as Determined and Full of Life
During the inquest, Charlie’s mother, Abbi Townsend, shared memories of her son and described the impact he had on those around him.
She said Charlie was born ten days early and was diagnosed with hypophosphatemic rickets, a rare genetic condition that affected his growth.
Despite being physically smaller than others, she said he refused to allow the condition to define him.
Charlie was described as a funny, popular and determined young man who had many friends and a strong bond with his family.
He enjoyed football and boxing, worked as a tarmacker, and took pride in proving himself.
Mother Pays Emotional Tribute to Son After Sudden Loss
Ms Townsend told the inquest that turning 18 marked an important milestone for Charlie, allowing him to enjoy more independence and spend weekends with his friends.
She described him as a “real character” who cared about his appearance and had a positive influence on many people around him.
In a statement, she said: “He touched the lives of so many people. He was charming and had a good way about him.”
She added that she struggled to accept she would never see her son again and wanted to continue his legacy in a way that would make him proud.
Alcohol Levels Played Role in Fatal Accident Investigation
A toxicology report presented during the hearing revealed that Charlie had a substantial amount of alcohol in his system at the time of his death.
The coroner said the teenager had been out with friends and was “very intoxicated” when he stepped off the train before walking along the platform and falling onto the live rail.
The official cause of death was recorded as electrocution.
Community Leaves Heartfelt Tributes for Charlie
Following Charlie’s death, friends, relatives and members of the community left emotional tributes near Strood station.
A vest featuring his photograph and the message “our Charlie boy, fly high son” was attached to fencing close to the station entrance.
Flowers, balloons and handwritten notes were also placed at the scene.
One tribute read: “Taken too soon but not forgotten. Fly high angel, forever in our hearts.”
Another message said: “Sadly missed and always remembered. Fly high, Charlie.”
A balloon left at the station carried the words: “Big Char, I love you so much, bruv.”
Tragic Loss Leaves Family Determined to Preserve His Memory
Charlie’s family continues to remember him as a young man who brought happiness to those around him and whose life ended far too soon.
The inquest highlighted the devastating consequences of the accident while allowing loved ones to share the memories of a teenager remembered for his humour, confidence and close relationships with those who cared for him.
