The atmosphere across the Swiss city was tense, with authorities deploying heavy security amid fears of unrest reminiscent of past summit-related violence.
The protest began in a lakeside park before swelling into a long procession that moved through barricaded streets under close police and aerial surveillance.
Growing Numbers and a Broad Coalition of Demands
What started as a large gathering quickly expanded as the march progressed.
Police initially estimated around 7,000 participants, but observers on the ground later suggested the crowd had grown to roughly 15,000 people.
The demonstration brought together an unusually wide coalition of roughly 200 organisations, including activist networks, unions, and advocacy groups.
Their demands spanned multiple global issues, with slogans denouncing the G7 system, calling for climate action, feminist policies, Palestinian solidarity, and broader anti-capitalist reforms.
Chants echoed through the city as participants waved banners reading messages such as “No to the G7 and all imperialist alliances” and “Abort the G7,” reflecting deep opposition to the policies associated with the world’s leading industrialised nations.
Tense Security Environment and Memories of Past Violence
Authorities in Switzerland and France adopted a highly cautious approach, citing concerns over potential unrest linked to previous summit-related disturbances, particularly the violent clashes that occurred during a similar gathering in 2003.
Large sections of Geneva were placed under tight control, with helicopters circling overhead and police forming visible barriers along the protest route.
Shops, public buildings, and transport hubs were partially secured in anticipation of possible spillover incidents.
Medical services in the region also prepared emergency response plans, including temporary structures near hospitals to handle potential mass casualties, underscoring the seriousness with which officials viewed the situation.
Political Tensions Ahead of the G7 Gathering
The summit itself is expected to bring together leaders from the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States, along with invited partner nations such as Brazil and India.
French President Emmanuel Macron, hosting the summit in Evian-les-Bains, was expected to arrive on Sunday evening, followed by other world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump.
This year’s agenda is expected to be dominated by escalating geopolitical tensions, including efforts to address the ongoing conflict involving Iran following military actions earlier in the year by the United States and Israel.
The uncertainty surrounding diplomatic negotiations has added further pressure to an already fragile international climate.
Protesters Voice Anger, Distrust, and Defiance
Among the crowd in Geneva, participants expressed frustration at what they described as distant decision-making by global leaders.
One 69-year-old Swiss retiree, Michel, said he joined the march because he rejected the idea that a small group of leaders should determine global outcomes without public consent, particularly while carrying a Palestinian flag in solidarity.
Others highlighted concerns that authorities were amplifying fear ahead of the demonstration.
Laure, representing one of the organising collectives, argued that official warnings exaggerated the risk of violence and discouraged participation, though she insisted the protest itself was largely peaceful and community-oriented.
The demonstration also featured striking visual symbolism, including artistic installations and politically charged imagery directed at world leaders, reflecting the intensity of sentiment within the crowd.
Isolated Clashes and Incidents During the March
While much of the march proceeded in a controlled and orderly manner, scattered incidents of unrest were reported.
Some masked groups were seen breaking away from the main procession, with a small number attempting to breach security barriers near residential areas.
Authorities also reported isolated acts of vandalism, including the burning of a vehicle and the tagging of property with anti-elite slogans.
A Tesla car was reportedly set on fire during the unrest, with graffiti referencing wealth inequality left at the scene.
Police confirmed that various objects considered potentially dangerous, including knives, gas canisters, and pyrotechnic devices, had been confiscated during security checks.
Heavy Security Deployment Across Switzerland and France
In response to the scale of both the summit and the protests, authorities across Switzerland and France mounted a significant security operation.
Up to 4,000 troops were mobilised in Switzerland to support local police, while French authorities deployed nearly 16,000 security personnel around the summit site in Evian-les-Bains and surrounding areas.
To manage movement and reduce risk, organisers restricted the protest route to a designated loop on the northern side of Geneva, deliberately steering activity away from the city centre and luxury commercial districts.
Despite the tensions, officials emphasised their goal of preventing escalation while allowing the demonstration to proceed under controlled conditions.
