Serena Williams is set to make a highly anticipated return to Wimbledon after accepting a late wildcard invitation, ending nearly four years away from singles competition at the All England Club.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion will step onto Centre Court on Tuesday for her first singles appearance at the tournament since 2022, having confirmed that she only committed to competing shortly before the registration deadline.
Last-Minute Decision Followed Weeks of Uncertainty
Speaking ahead of the tournament, the 44-year-old admitted she remained undecided about returning until just hours before the deadline to accept her wildcard.
Williams explained that while she is still adjusting to the idea of competing again at the highest level, she believes the experience will be enjoyable after gradually rebuilding her confidence on court.
Her comeback gained momentum earlier this month when she returned to competitive action in the doubles event at Queen’s Club alongside 19-year-old Victoria Mboko. The pair secured an opening-round victory over the tournament’s third seeds before withdrawing because of Mboko’s injury.
Luxury London Residence Served as Tournament Base
During her preparations in London, Williams stayed in an exclusive six-bedroom Airbnb residence in central London reportedly valued at approximately £40,000 per week.
The seven-story property features spacious living areas, elegant interiors, a rooftop terrace, floor-to-ceiling sash windows, crystal chandeliers, and luxurious bathrooms, providing a quiet retreat during tournament week.
Williams later thanked Airbnb publicly for the accommodation, writing on social media that the peaceful surroundings had helped her prepare for competition. The property’s owner also expressed appreciation for hosting one of tennis’ greatest champions.
Familiar Grounds Bring Confidence
Despite her lengthy absence from Wimbledon singles, Williams believes returning to the grass courts feels natural.
The American said competing at Wimbledon is “like riding a bike,” reflecting her confidence gained from years of success at the Grand Slam where she lifted the singles trophy seven times.
She will also reunite with her sister Venus Williams in the doubles draw after both received wildcard entries.
Former Champion Voices Frustration Over Anti-Doping Rules
While expressing excitement about her comeback, Williams also criticized the anti-doping requirements that accompany her return to professional tennis.
She described the testing procedures as unreasonable, explaining that they often prevent her from spending time with her children because she must remain available for testing.
Williams admitted that the demands of the anti-doping system were among the factors that initially made her reluctant to resume competitive tennis.
Family Life Remains Central to Her Return
Since stepping away from full-time competition, Williams has devoted much of her attention to family life with her husband, entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian.
The couple welcomed their second daughter, Adira, in 2023, further reinforcing Williams’ decision to prioritize life away from the professional tour before considering another Wimbledon campaign.
Opening Match Offers New Generation Challenge
Williams begins her singles campaign against Australia’s world No. 53 Maya Joint, one of the sport’s emerging young talents.
The first-round contest presents an intriguing meeting between one of tennis’ most decorated champions and a player representing the next generation of the women’s game.
Organizers Face Weather and Technical Challenges
As Wimbledon prepares for the start of the main draw, tournament organizers continue dealing with difficult conditions caused by recent extreme weather.
Storms last week flooded the media center, while unusually high temperatures disrupted the Hawk-Eye electronic line-calling system during qualifying matches.
Although cooler weather arrived over the weekend, forecasts suggest temperatures could climb back to around 31 degrees Celsius later in the tournament, creating additional challenges for players and officials alike.
