England’s hopes of finding a missing teenager alive at a Kentucky lake have ended in tragedy after search crews recovered her body several days after she disappeared during a boating trip.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the operator of the boat has already been charged with boating under the influence.
The search for 19-year-old Marly Kinney has come to a heartbreaking conclusion after authorities recovered her body from Grayson Lake in Kentucky nearly five days after she was reported missing.
Officials with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources located Kinney’s body on Sunday afternoon near the area where she disappeared during a boating outing earlier in the week.
Her death remains under investigation, and the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort has not yet determined or released the official cause of death.
Disappearance Sparked Major Search Operation
Kinney was last seen around 4 p.m. on Wednesday while visiting Grayson Lake, approximately 180 miles east of Louisville.
According to court documents, 23-year-old Cameron Conley informed employees at Grayson Lake Marina that he could not locate one of the passengers aboard the boat he had been operating. His report prompted an extensive search involving multiple emergency agencies that continued for several days.
Poor weather conditions reportedly complicated rescue efforts throughout the search, with authorities previously acknowledging that conditions on the lake were making operations more difficult.
Boat Operator Faces DUI Charge
As investigators responded to the incident, attention quickly turned to the boat’s operator.
Court records state that officers observed signs suggesting Conley had been drinking alcohol. Authorities reported smelling alcohol on his breath and noted that his eyes appeared bloodshot and glassy during their interaction with him.
According to investigators, Conley admitted consuming alcohol and agreed to undergo a preliminary breath test.
The results allegedly showed blood alcohol concentrations of 0.137 and 0.135 during separate tests conducted roughly 20 minutes apart—well above Kentucky’s legal limit for operating a boat.
He was subsequently charged with operating a vessel while under the influence and was taken into custody at the Carter County Detention Center before later being released. Court records indicate he is scheduled to appear for arraignment on July 22.
At this stage, authorities have not announced any additional criminal charges.
Witness Describes Seeing Group Near Popular Cliff-Jumping Spot
As investigators worked to piece together the events leading up to Kinney’s disappearance, a local resident shared information that may help establish the group’s movements before the incident.
Leah Ross said she and her family were boating on Grayson Lake when they encountered Kinney and several friends near a cliff-jumping location commonly referred to by locals as “Sex Rock.”
Ross said she photographed the group and also captured time-stamped videos showing several people jumping from the rock at approximately 2:20 p.m. She estimated the group remained in the area for another 10 to 20 minutes before moving on.
The images and videos may assist investigators as they continue reconstructing the timeline of the day’s events.
Investigation Continues Following Recovery
Kinney’s public social media account reportedly showed that she followed an individual sharing the same name as Cameron Conley, although authorities have not indicated whether that information has any relevance to the investigation.
Law enforcement officials have emphasized that the inquiry remains active as investigators await the medical examiner’s findings and continue reviewing evidence gathered during the search.
The recovery of Kinney’s body brings an end to days of uncertainty for her family and friends, but many questions surrounding the circumstances of her disappearance remain unanswered as authorities continue their investigation.
