Canada booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 in dramatic fashion after Stephen Eustaquio scored a stunning stoppage-time winner to seal a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles.
The late strike ended a fiercely contested knockout clash and kept Jesse Marsch’s side on course for a deeper tournament run.
Canada Leave It Late to Secure Quarter-Final Dream
With extra time looming, Eustaquio produced the decisive moment deep into added time, striking a bouncing ball first time from the edge of the penalty area and sending it into the bottom corner.
His spectacular finish sparked wild celebrations among Canadian players and supporters as the Reds clinched their place in the last 16.
The victory means Canada will now prepare for a meeting with either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston, with hopes of extending their impressive World Cup campaign.
South Africa Match Canada in Competitive First Half
South Africa entered the match full of confidence after reaching the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history and showed they were capable of troubling their opponents from the opening whistle.
Bafana Bafana created several promising attacking moves during the first half but struggled to find the decisive final pass.
At the opposite end, Canada came agonisingly close to taking the lead before halftime when Moise Bombito’s goal-bound header was brilliantly cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba.
Moments later, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams reacted superbly to deny Tajon Buchanan from close range.
The teams headed into the break with neither side able to convert their opportunities despite an entertaining opening 45 minutes.
Canada Increase the Pressure After the Interval
Canada emerged from halftime with greater urgency and began controlling possession for longer periods.
Their attacking pressure nearly paid off when Tani Oluwaseyi forced Williams into another outstanding save before defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi intervened quickly to clear the rebound before it could be tapped into an empty net.
As the match entered its closing stages, Canada continued searching for the breakthrough while South Africa defended with determination.
Alphonso Davies Adds Energy Before Eustaquio Delivers the Winner
The introduction of Alphonso Davies in the 75th minute injected fresh pace and creativity into Canada’s attack. His direct running immediately stretched South Africa’s defence and created additional pressure in the final third.
However, it was Eustaquio who ultimately settled the contest. In the second minute of stoppage time, the Canadian midfielder connected perfectly with a loose bouncing ball outside the penalty area, firing an unstoppable shot beyond Williams to send Canada into the next round.
South Africa Exit With Pride After Historic Tournament
Although South Africa’s World Cup journey ended in heartbreaking fashion, Hugo Broos’ side leaves the tournament having achieved a national milestone by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time.
The veteran coach also made history by becoming the oldest manager to oversee a team in the World Cup knockout stage at 74 years and 79 days, surpassing the previous record held by Uruguay’s Oscar Tabárez.
Eustaquio Earns Player of the Match Recognition
Stephen Eustaquio was named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match after delivering the decisive goal that kept Canada’s World Cup hopes alive.
Reflecting on the victory, the midfielder praised his teammates’ determination and dedication throughout the match.
“We worked a lot to get this victory. We really wanted to give this win to all the Canadians,” Eustaquio said. “We just kept believing and kept pushing. It was an amazing goal, but when I shot I felt everyone shot with me. Everybody put a little bit of power on it and it went to the back of the net.”
Looking ahead to Canada’s next challenge, he added that whichever team advances between Morocco and the Netherlands should expect an extremely difficult contest.
“We’re going to make them feel they’re facing one of the hardest games they’ll have in this World Cup. We did an amazing job today, and it’s going to be another amazing match next week.”
