England Fans Face Tough Travel Decisions as Knockout Stage Brings Rising Costs and Long Journeys

England’s place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage has been secured, but for many supporters the next challenge is not on the pitch—it is deciding whether they can afford to keep following the team across North America.

England supporters are weighing the financial and logistical demands of following their team deeper into the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Saturday’s victory over Panama confirmed their route through the knockout stages.

While the 2-0 win ensured England finished top of their group, fans had only just learned where the team would play next, leaving many scrambling to make expensive travel plans at short notice.

Atlanta Awaits After Group Stage Success

England will travel to Atlanta, Georgia, for a Round of 32 clash against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday. The fixture will mark the first-ever meeting between the two nations on the international stage.

However, enthusiasm over England’s progress has been tempered by soaring travel expenses. Match tickets are selling for more than £640, with additional costs for flights, hotels and local transport making the trip a significant financial commitment.

For some supporters, the question is whether it makes more sense to save their money in anticipation of later rounds should England continue their World Cup campaign.

Supporters Already Planning for Mexico

Victory over DR Congo would send England to the iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City for a potential Round of 16 encounter against tournament hosts Mexico, a prospect many travelling fans have already begun planning for.

Luke Carey, a 25-year-old supporter from Watford, said he intends to head directly to Mexico in anticipation of England’s next challenge.

He estimated that his entire World Cup adventure would cost around £8,000 once tickets, accommodation, transport, meals and other expenses are included. Carey joked that he has been carefully tracking every expense on a spreadsheet, comparing the experience to competing in a global travel challenge.

Mixed Feelings After Panama Victory

Not every supporter left England’s performance convinced the trip to Atlanta would be worthwhile.

Adam Alfandary, originally from London but now based in New York, admitted the display against Panama lacked excitement despite delivering the desired result.

He said he questioned whether spending hundreds of dollars on flights to Atlanta made sense after watching such an uninspiring performance, although he still expected to make the journey to support the team.

Last-Minute Ticket Purchases Continue

Others changed their plans after England secured top spot in the group.

Alfie Van Loo, from Surrey, admitted he had originally intended to skip the Atlanta fixture and focus instead on England’s possible match in Mexico.

After logging onto FIFA’s resale platform, however, he managed to secure a ticket costing around £1,000 and decided the opportunity was too good to miss.

Although he acknowledged England struggled for long periods against Panama, he credited Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane with producing the decisive moments that ultimately earned victory.

Following England Comes at a Heavy Price

For supporters attending every England match, the miles continue to mount almost as quickly as the costs.

Fans who travelled to all three group-stage fixtures have already covered approximately 6,600 miles. If England reach the final, the complete journey—including the return home—would total roughly 15,000 miles.

Daily expenses have also climbed sharply, with beers priced around £15 and hotel rooms averaging approximately £225 per night in some host cities.

As a result, many England supporters estimate they will spend anywhere between £4,000 and £10,000 before the tournament concludes, making this World Cup one of the most expensive ever for travelling fans.

Hope of Glory Keeps Fans Moving

Despite the mounting bills and demanding travel schedule, many supporters remain determined to continue following England for as long as the team stays in the competition.

For those making the journey, the possibility of witnessing England lift the World Cup trophy is proving enough motivation to justify the expense, even as every additional victory brings another costly destination.
