Ukraine has accused Russia of dramatically intensifying its aerial campaign, saying approximately 2,100 drones, nearly 1,700 guided aerial bombs and 78 missiles of various types were launched against the country within the space of a single week.
According to Ukrainian authorities, a significant proportion of the drones used during the attacks were jet-powered Shahed-type systems, which Kyiv says Russia is increasingly deploying against economic infrastructure and civilian areas.
The latest figures highlight the scale of the continuing aerial confrontation as Ukrainian cities, transportation networks, energy facilities and businesses remain exposed to repeated Russian strikes.
Energy Facilities and Residential Buildings Targeted
The most recent wave of attacks continued overnight and into the morning, with Ukrainian officials reporting damage to energy infrastructure, businesses, residential buildings and facilities belonging to Ukrzaliznytsia, the country’s national railway operator.
Odesa was among the locations targeted, with both missiles and drones reportedly used against the southern Ukrainian city.
Emergency personnel and other essential services were deployed across affected areas as authorities assessed damage and carried out recovery operations.
Several western regions of Ukraine were also dealing with the aftermath of overnight strikes, demonstrating that attacks were not confined to territories closer to the main battlefield.
Drone Strike Hits Railway Infrastructure Near Polish Border
Particular attention was focused on the Volyn region near Ukraine’s border with Poland, where Ukrainian authorities said a Russian drone strike damaged critical infrastructure.
According to the Ukrainian account, a train locomotive was deliberately set on fire during the attack, while a gas station was also damaged.
Emergency and recovery teams were operating in the area following the strike.
The incident is significant because of Volyn’s proximity to Poland, a NATO and European Union member that has played an important logistical role in supporting Ukraine since the conflict began.
Kyiv Links Attacks to Wider European Security
Ukrainian officials used the latest strikes to renew their argument that the war represents a security threat extending beyond the country’s borders.
Kyiv maintains that Ukrainian forces are effectively preventing Russian military aggression from spreading deeper into Europe and argues that continued international military assistance is essential to maintaining that defensive barrier.
The Ukrainian statement praised soldiers and civilians involved in the country’s defence, saying Ukrainians continue to make significant sacrifices to prevent the conflict from expanding.
Ukraine Calls for Continued Air Defence Support
The scale of the reported attacks has again placed Ukraine’s air defence requirements at the centre of its appeals to international partners.
With thousands of drones and aerial bombs reportedly deployed within days, Ukrainian authorities say protecting cities and infrastructure increasingly depends on maintaining sufficient air defence systems and interceptor supplies.
Kyiv thanked countries and organisations contributing to the defence of Ukrainian airspace and providing assistance to civilians affected by the strikes.
Ukrainian officials insist that Russia’s continuing aerial campaign should be regarded as a broader international security challenge, arguing that defeating the threat inside Ukraine remains crucial to preventing further instability across Europe.
