A devastating house fire in Essex has left eight families without homes after a disposable barbecue reportedly sparked a blaze that tore through an entire row of terraced properties during one of the hottest periods of the year.
Homes Destroyed in Rapidly Spreading Fire
What began as an ordinary summer afternoon quickly turned into a nightmare for residents of a row of terraced houses in Basildon, Essex, after a disposable barbecue is believed to have ignited a fire that spread across eight homes.
The blaze broke out on June 21 during a period of extreme heat and rapidly engulfed rooftops, leaving all eight properties severely damaged and unfit for habitation.
Firefighters from seven different stations rushed to the scene and worked to contain the flames as they raced through the connected homes.
Residents described the destruction as overwhelming, with entire families suddenly finding themselves without a place to live.
A Simple Barbecue Turned Into Disaster
Among those affected was 25-year-old Paryss Reynolds, whose family home was one of the properties destroyed.
According to Reynolds, her mother, Cara, had been using a disposable barbecue in the garden, something the family had done many times before without incident.
After cooking a burger, she went inside to eat, leaving the barbecue outside.
Moments later, she heard a loud roaring sound and rushed back outdoors.
A nearby tree had caught fire.
She attempted to extinguish the flames with a bucket of water, but the fire spread with alarming speed.
Within minutes, the blaze had reached the roof of the house.
From there, the interconnected terraced roofs allowed the flames to move quickly from property to property, creating a large-scale emergency that firefighters struggled to contain.
Families Lose Their Homes and Possessions
The destruction left residents heartbroken.
Reynolds said her family has effectively lost everything they owned.
She explained that while the loss of her own home is difficult to process, the tragedy extends far beyond her family.
Every property affected housed families who have now been forced from their homes.
The emotional impact has been particularly severe for her mother, who remains deeply distressed by the incident and feels tremendous guilt over what happened.
Reynolds described the situation as devastating, saying the family is still trying to come to terms with the scale of the loss.
Neighbours Watch in Shock
Residents living nearby watched helplessly as smoke and flames consumed the houses.
Mike Campbell, who lives opposite the affected row, said emergency crews arrived quickly after smoke was spotted.
He believes roofing materials may have contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze.
Although his own property escaped significant damage, Campbell said the incident was frightening to witness.
Aside from ash and debris, his home remained intact, something he considers extremely fortunate given how quickly the fire moved through the neighbourhood.
He noted that many of the houses in the area share similar construction, leaving residents wondering how easily the disaster could have affected their own homes.
Returning to the Scene Reveals the Extent of the Damage
In the days following the fire, affected families were briefly allowed back into their properties to recover personal belongings.
Reynolds described the damage inside her home as severe.
She said sections of the roof appeared unstable and were visibly sagging, raising concerns about possible collapse.
Her family, including pets, was temporarily housed in a hotel by the local council.
However, they now face the difficult task of securing longer-term accommodation while waiting for assessments of the damaged properties.
The ordeal has been made even more painful by the disappearance of the family’s cat.
Reynolds said she managed to locate the frightened animal when she returned to the property, but it ran away before she could safely retrieve it.
Community Rallies Around Victims
As news of the disaster spread, members of the community began raising funds to support the displaced residents.
Several fundraising campaigns have been launched to help families replace essential belongings and meet immediate living expenses.
Basildon Council has also supported fundraising efforts, including the creation of a GoFundMe campaign for affected households.
Reynolds said the generosity shown by strangers and neighbours has been deeply moving during an otherwise heartbreaking period.
Heatwave Conditions Raise Safety Concerns
The fire occurred as Britain experienced exceptionally high temperatures, with weather conditions creating heightened fire risks across the country.
The heatwave brought record-breaking temperatures and prompted rare weather warnings.
Meteorologists warned that temperatures could climb even higher, potentially challenging national records set during previous extreme heat events.
The soaring temperatures have disrupted daily life across the UK, leading hundreds of schools to shorten their schedules and prompting warnings about travel difficulties.
Rail operators have cautioned passengers about possible delays caused by heat-related damage to infrastructure, including warped tracks and overhead line problems.
Against this backdrop, the Basildon fire serves as a stark reminder of how quickly everyday items such as disposable barbecues can become dangerous during periods of extreme weather, with consequences that can change lives in a matter of minutes.
