The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards delivered a night of milestones in Los Angeles, with four major records falling or being matched as television’s biggest stars celebrated their achievements.
The ceremony, held Monday at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, saw Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay emerge as the night’s biggest overall winner, while veteran performers Jean Smart and Allison Janney added their names to the Emmy record books.
Matthew Rhys also enjoyed a remarkable double victory, becoming the first actor to win two leading acting awards in different categories at the same ceremony.
Widow’s Bay Sets a New Comedy Emmy Record
Widow’s Bay dominated the comedy categories and ultimately established a new record for the most Emmy Awards won by a comedy series in a single season.
The Apple TV production entered the ceremony with 19 nominations and finished with 14 wins overall.
Eight of those awards had already been secured during the previous weekend’s ceremonies.
Its victory for Outstanding Comedy Series on Monday pushed its total beyond the previous record of 13, set by The Studio last year.
The series also collected awards for writing and directing, with Katie Dippold winning Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Hiro Murai taking Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.
Matthew Rhys Makes Emmy History With Double Lead Victory
Matthew Rhys produced one of the evening’s most unusual achievements by collecting two leading acting prizes in separate categories.
The Widow’s Bay star first won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in the Apple TV production.
Later in the evening, he returned to the winners’ list after taking Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me.
The double triumph made Rhys the first actor to win two leading acting awards in different categories during a single Emmy ceremony.
His Widow’s Bay victory was part of the show’s extraordinary haul, which also included a supporting acting prize for Stephen Root and a supporting actress award for Kate O’Flynn.
Jean Smart Completes Extraordinary Emmy Streak
Jean Smart added another remarkable achievement to an already decorated career when she won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks.
The victory was her fifth in the category for playing Deborah Vance and made her the first female performer to win an Emmy for every season of the same show.
Smart’s latest triumph puts her alongside an extremely select group.
She became only the second performer overall to accomplish the feat, following Bill Cosby’s three-season run on I Spy between 1966 and 1968.
The 75-year-old actress received a standing ovation as she accepted the award, before joking about the audience remaining on its feet.
She also used her speech to thank her representatives and her children before dedicating the honor to Hacks creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky.
Allison Janney Joins the Eight-Emmy Club
Allison Janney also reached a major career milestone when she won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of U.S. President Grace Penn in The Diplomat.
The award was Janney’s eighth Emmy, placing her level with the record for the most Emmy wins by a performer.
She now shares that mark with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman, while Smart also reached eight total acting Emmys earlier in the evening.
Janney previously earned four Emmys for playing C.J. Cregg on The West Wing. She subsequently added two awards for Mom and another for her guest performance in Masters of Sex.
The Pitt Repeats Its Drama Triumph
While Widow’s Bay dominated comedy, HBO Max’s The Pitt once again ruled the drama field.
The medical drama won Outstanding Drama Series, while Noah Wyle collected Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Both awards mirrored the show’s success at the previous year’s ceremony.
The Pitt entered the 2026 ceremony with 25 nominations, more than any other individual series, and also secured supporting acting recognition through Tom Pelphrey’s victory.
Rhea Seehorn Beats Zendaya for Lead Drama Actress
One of the night’s notable acting surprises came in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category.
Rhea Seehorn won the award for her performance in Pluribus, defeating a highly competitive field that included Zendaya for Euphoria, Carrie Coon for The Gilded Age, Chase Infiniti for The Testaments and Keri Russell for The Diplomat.
The victory gave Seehorn one of the night’s most prominent individual honors and added another major achievement to Pluribus‘s Emmy campaign.
Sally Field Takes Limited Series Acting Prize
Sally Field also claimed one of the evening’s acting prizes, winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Remarkably Bright Creatures.
She prevailed over Claire Danes in The Beast in Me, Carey Mulligan in Beef, Sarah Pidgeon in Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette and Sarah Snook in All Her Fault.
The limited-series acting category also produced another victory for Rhys, whose performance in The Beast in Me earned him the corresponding lead actor award.
DTF St. Louis Takes Limited Series Crown
DTF St. Louis won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, beating All Her Fault, The Beast in Me, Beef and Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.
The victory gave the production one of the ceremony’s most prestigious awards in the limited-series field.
Colbert, The Traitors and More Join the Winners
The ceremony also saw The Traitors win Outstanding Reality Competition Program, beating Dancing With the Stars, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Survivor and Top Chef.
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert took Outstanding Variety Series, adding an Emmy to Colbert’s now-cancelled late-night programme.
In writing, Vince Gilligan won Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for Pluribus, while Katie Dippold’s Widow’s Bay script earned Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
Saul Metzstein won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for Slow Horses, while Hiro Murai’s direction of Widow’s Bay secured the comedy directing prize.
Mariska Hargitay Hosts the Ceremony
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards were hosted by Law & Order: SVU star and executive producer Mariska Hargitay.
Her appearance marked the first time in 15 years that a woman had hosted the ceremony, adding another notable moment to an evening already defined by historic achievements.
With record-setting wins, repeat champions and unexpected victories spread across the major categories, the 2026 ceremony became one of the most statistically notable Emmy nights in recent years.
