BBC Radio 5 Live host Tony Livesey has temporarily stepped away from his presenting duties while the broadcaster reviews serious allegations aired in a BBC Panorama investigation connected to claims involving West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan.
The decision comes after Livesey was referenced in a documentary that forms part of a wider inquiry into historical allegations surrounding Sullivan’s conduct and the environment within his former newspaper empire.
BBC Confirms It Is Reviewing Allegations
The BBC said it is actively assessing the claims raised in the programme, which include references to the veteran radio presenter.
According to the corporation, Livesey—who had been scheduled to host his regular late-night 5 Live programme—requested a temporary step back from broadcasting duties while the matter is considered.
A BBC spokesperson stated that the organisation takes the allegations seriously and noted that Livesey has strongly denied any wrongdoing.
The broadcaster added that it would not provide further comment at this stage.
Claim of a 1999 Encounter at the Centre of Allegations
At the heart of the Panorama report is testimony from a woman identified under the pseudonym “Florence,” who alleges she was sexually exploited in 1999 after being promised career opportunities in modelling.
She claims that a meeting initially presented as a professional opportunity was arranged after she met Livesey during his time working in the newsroom of the Daily Sport.
According to her account, he then contacted Sullivan directly to set up an introduction.
Florence alleges she later visited Sullivan’s Essex residence expecting a casting or job interview but was instead pressured into a sexual encounter. Sullivan denies all allegations against him.
Livesey Rejects Claims and Distances Himself
Livesey has rejected any suggestion of wrongdoing, stating he has no recollection of the incident described in the Panorama programme.
He expressed sympathy for anyone who believes they may have been harmed but firmly denied participating in or facilitating any abuse. He also dismissed the allegations as serious and disturbing.
Livesey, a former editor of the Daily Sport and Sunday Sport, has built a long broadcasting career with BBC Radio 5 Live, where he has worked for nearly two decades across multiple programmes.
Wider Allegations Against David Sullivan
The Panorama investigation forms part of a broader inquiry into allegations made by several women who say they were exploited while seeking modelling work in the 1980s and 1990s.
Multiple accounts describe meetings arranged through Sullivan’s media outlets, where aspiring models were allegedly pressured into sexual activity in exchange for career opportunities.
Sullivan has consistently denied all accusations.
The programme also references historical claims about the culture surrounding his publishing businesses, including controversial promotional features that were later criticised and restricted under UK law changes.
Corporate and Football Fallout at West Ham
The controversy has placed additional scrutiny on Sullivan’s role at West Ham United FC, where he has been a long-standing co-owner.
He recently stepped down from his leadership position at the club, stating he wished to avoid disruption while addressing the allegations.
The club confirmed that interim leadership arrangements remain in place to maintain day-to-day operations.
Reports also suggest potential internal tensions among shareholders, with questions emerging over future control of the club.
Industry Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
The BBC Panorama investigation, produced in collaboration with The Times, continues to generate significant attention within both media and political circles.
The corporation has said it will continue to consider all issues raised, while Livesey remains temporarily off air.
Sullivan, meanwhile, continues to reject all claims and has indicated he may pursue legal action against media outlets reporting the allegations.
The situation remains under active review as further details from the investigation are expected to emerge.
