Italian authorities have opened a murder investigation after the naked body of a 35-year-old British man was discovered in a secluded area of Sicily, close to a community living an off-grid lifestyle.
The man was found dead on Saturday night in the countryside between Noto and Canicattini Bagni, in the province of Syracuse.
Investigators are now working to establish how he died and what happened during the days leading up to his death.
Body Discovered Near Tent and Abandoned Farmhouse
According to local reports, the man had been staying in the isolated area for several days and had reportedly come into contact with a group of people living in abandoned farmhouses and temporary camps.
His body was found inside or close to a tent reportedly used by members of the community as a meeting place.
Police are said to have discovered a nearby farmhouse containing a rope, psychotropic substances and a goat’s head.
The unusual items have prompted speculation in local media about whether the death could have been connected to an esoteric or occult ritual.
Signs of Violence Raise Suspicion
Authorities have not established that a ritual took place, and the circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain under investigation.
However, police reportedly found signs of violence around the man’s neck, raising concerns that his death may have involved another person.
A post-mortem examination has therefore been ordered to determine the precise cause and circumstances of his death.
The examination is expected to provide investigators with crucial evidence as they reconstruct the final hours of the British man’s life.
Remote Community Known as ‘Hippies’
The group living in the area is reportedly familiar to residents of the surrounding municipalities.
Locals have described its members as “hippies” or “flower children”, with many living a nomadic lifestyle and moving between remote locations.
Canicattini Bagni mayor Paolo Amenta told MeridioNews that the group had not previously been associated with problems in the community.
“They have never caused any problems with public order or otherwise,” Amenta said, adding that some members had even interacted with local residents.
Nomadic Lifestyle Brings Foreign Visitors
Amenta said many members of the group remain in the area for periods ranging from around ten days to a month, although some stay for considerably longer.
Some reportedly occupy abandoned farmhouses or use campsites on open land, while others have established more permanent arrangements after inheriting or purchasing plots of land.
“They also welcome friends who share the same lifestyle,” the mayor said, describing a group that includes children and young graduates from other countries who are seeking a more independent way of living.
Police Probe Focuses on Circumstances of Death
The discovery has nevertheless prompted investigators to examine the man’s connections to the community and the circumstances in which he spent his final days.
The presence of unusual objects at the nearby farmhouse, combined with the reported injuries to his neck, has fuelled questions about whether an alleged ritual was involved.
Authorities have yet to confirm such a connection, and no definitive explanation for the man’s death has been established.
The post-mortem examination is due to take place in the coming days while Italian police continue gathering evidence from the remote site and questioning people who may have encountered the British man before his death.
