Danny Jordaan has secured another term as president of the South African Football Association, defeating AmaZulu FC boss Sandile Zungu by 157 votes to 82 at the organisation’s elective congress.
The result extends Jordaan’s leadership of SAFA, which began in 2013 when he succeeded Kirsten Nematandani. For Zungu, the outcome ended a campaign centred on changing the direction of South African football.
Zungu Thanks Supporters and Congratulates Jordaan
Writing on Facebook on 12 September, Zungu accepted the delegates’ decision and said he had personally congratulated Jordaan.
“Such is the nature of contestations. You win some and lose some,” he wrote, adding that he remained “in very high spirits” despite the defeat.
He also thanked those who had supported his candidacy and believed he could deliver the changes he advocated. While his campaign did not secure enough votes, his response expressed acceptance of the outcome.
A Campaign Built Around Change and Unity
Zungu’s reaction followed confident statements in the days leading up to the election. Five days before the result, he had told supporters that change at SAFA was inevitable and predicted victory on Saturday.
In another Facebook post, he outlined his ambition to unite the association and help South African football enter a more successful period. Those messages presented a candidate determined to challenge the existing leadership, although that confidence ultimately did not translate into a majority at the congress.
Business Interests Extend Beyond AmaZulu
Beyond football administration, the KwaZulu-Natal-born businessman has interests that include Sizekhaya Holdings, AmaZulu FC and his investment company, ZICO Investments.
The 59-year-old’s family is also associated with The Zunguness, a wedding venue in KwaZulu-Natal founded by his late wife, Zodwa Zungu.
Zungu married his current wife, Nozipho KaMagubane Zungu, at the venue in 2022. It later hosted the wedding of Maskandi musician Khuzani Mpungose and his wife in December 2025.
