Marcus Rashford’s hopes of extending his stay in Spain appear to have come to an end, with reports indicating that Barcelona have decided against making a permanent move for the Manchester United forward despite having the option to sign him for a relatively modest fee.

Barcelona Walk Away From Rashford Deal

Barcelona have reportedly informed Manchester United that they will not be pursuing a permanent transfer for Marcus Rashford ahead of the new season.

Although the England international was available for around £26 million under the terms of his loan arrangement, the Spanish giants are unwilling to meet that valuation.

The decision effectively sends Rashford back into United’s plans for now, despite the player’s desire to continue his career at the Nou Camp after spending time with the Catalan club.

Spanish reports suggest Barcelona were only prepared to offer approximately £13 million, roughly half of United’s asking price.

The Premier League side rejected the proposal, bringing negotiations to a halt.

Anthony Gordon Chosen Over United Star

Rather than investing in Rashford, Barcelona have opted to strengthen their attack by securing the services of England winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a deal worth around £70 million.

According to reports from Spain, club officials viewed Gordon as a more suitable fit for their long-term plans.

His defensive contribution reportedly played a significant role in the decision, with Rashford’s work off the ball considered one of the weaker aspects of his game.

The four-year age difference between the two players also reportedly influenced Barcelona’s thinking.

In addition, Rashford’s substantial salary package would have significantly increased the overall cost of any transfer, making the deal less attractive from a financial perspective.

Barcelona Continue Aggressive Transfer Plans

Barcelona’s transfer activity does not appear to be slowing down.

Reports indicate the club have also submitted an offer to bring Bernardo Silva to Spain following his departure from Manchester City.

At the same time, the Catalan side are reportedly prepared to spend more than £100 million in an attempt to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid as they search for a long-term successor to veteran striker Robert Lewandowski.

Even without Rashford, Barcelona possess an impressive collection of attacking talent, including Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Ferran Torres and Fermin Lopez, reducing the urgency to add another forward to their squad.

Rashford Faces Uncertain Future

While Rashford had hoped to remain at Barcelona, attention will now turn to finding a new destination.

Manchester United are expected to explore alternative options and may benefit if the forward performs strongly for England at the upcoming World Cup, potentially increasing his market value.

Several Premier League clubs are believed to be monitoring the situation.

Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa have all been linked with interest, with Villa already familiar with the player after his loan spell during the second half of last season.

Opportunities could also emerge elsewhere in Europe.

Real Madrid, who are reportedly preparing for a new era under former United manager José Mourinho, have been mentioned alongside Bayern Munich and Chelsea as possible destinations.

Wages Could Complicate Any Transfer

One of the biggest obstacles to a permanent move remains Rashford’s salary.

The forward earns around £315,000 per week and will celebrate his 29th birthday in October, factors that may limit the number of clubs willing to meet both Manchester United’s valuation and his wage demands.

To facilitate a transfer, Rashford may ultimately need to accept a reduced salary package or negotiate a financial settlement with United.

His last competitive appearance for his boyhood club came in December 2024, underlining how far he has drifted from the first-team picture at Old Trafford.

Return to Carrington Remains Possible

Should Manchester United fail to secure a transfer before players report back for pre-season following the World Cup, Rashford would be expected to return to the club’s Carrington training complex.

That scenario could create an awkward situation for both sides.

Last summer, several players considered surplus to requirements—including Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia—trained separately from the main squad in what became known as a “bomb squad.”

Whether United would adopt a similar approach again remains unclear.

With the club actively searching for reinforcements on the left wing while simultaneously attempting to move Rashford on, a resolution appears to be in everyone’s interests.

Onana Also Awaiting Clarity

Rashford is not the only player facing uncertainty.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana is also expected to return to Manchester United unless a transfer is arranged.

After spending the season on loan at Trabzonspor and helping the Turkish club lift the Turkish Cup, Onana remains outside United’s long-term plans following the emergence of Senne Lammens, who was recently recognized as the Premier League’s signing of the season.

Trabzonspor are interested in keeping the goalkeeper, potentially through another loan agreement.

However, United would prefer a permanent sale.

Recovering a significant portion of the £47.2 million they originally paid to sign him from Inter Milan could prove difficult, particularly after reportedly valuing him at £30 million during discussions with Monaco last summer.

For now, both Rashford and Onana remain in limbo as Manchester United continue efforts to reshape their squad before the new campaign begins.
